  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • During my time at BAE systems I have gained a wide range of knowledge on Aerospace Engineering , Learning to become the best at my job as a Fitter. Throughout the day I am always learning something new, working alongside some of the best engineers in the industry and never failing to be impressed by the business.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Coming straight from college I have built my skills up enormously gaining knowledge in a wide range of engineering jobs. Being part of BAE systems means you learn the best way to do a job, gaining experience from skilled men I work alongside with and building myself up as an individual.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed my whole time at BAE systems as an apprentice, not only learning to be the best at my trade but also building myself up as a person, doing extra curriculum tasks such as Outward bound trips and tours around the business. There is always something to do and get involved in.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very structured and organised right from the start. The apprenticeship try's to get the best out of you as an employee, making sure you are checked regularly and you are always comfortable throughout the business. If you have a problem then all you need to do is ask.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Throughout the apprenticeship support is always there for you, whether you want to do more to better yourself or if you just want to learn more about a wide range of opportunities in the business. You will never get turned down and BAE systems will always try to help at anything they can.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Throughout the apprenticeship you get a lot of help with your qualifications and you can always try to do better, for example going for a degree or a higher degree if it suits your needs in the business. You have one day of college a week, where you focus solely on your qualifications.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • In the apprenticeship they try to link your college work with the work you do in the business, trying to make it relatable. The stuff you learn in college will help you in the business and will give a greater insight on how the engineering works on they tasks your doing.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There's always something to do at BAE systems as an apprentice, from going to sport clubs to going to road shows for the company. If you want to do something you can do it and you will get encouraged to do extra-curricular activities as it will make you more comfortable in the business.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Its one of the biggest defence company in the world, with so much to learn and do. If you want to go for an engineering role like I did there is no better place, with BAE systems being one of the most respected companies in the UK, you will always have something to do.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • BAE systems is a popular apprenticeship, with thousands applying every year however if you think you would enjoy your time here and want to build your skills no matter what type of job role you want to do, then its definitely worth applying. At BAE they look at you as a person and how they can build you up.
