Commercial Assistant Review

I assist with the commercial department on a construction project. My day to day tasks include preparing and issuing tender enquiry packages to send to subcontractors. I also undertake tender analysis of tender returns. I have to create and maintain commercial registers that track the activities carried out by the commercial managers

I have learnt many new skills since starting with Mace. My social skills have developed since I have started working in a team. My attention to detail has developed from analyzing drawings and various documents to complete various tasks. I have developed my math and literacy skills through working over time.

I enjoy being part of a team. It is also very rewarding seeing a project from start to finish and knowing you have been part of that. It can be stressful at times but the positives outweigh the negatives. I enjoy learning new things and attended different courses as it allows you to develop your knowledge

The internal apprenticeship programme is very organized and structured. There is a series of training sessions held for us throughout each year. We also have organized site visits where we get to visit various projects across the business to get a real feel for the work and learn about different methods of construction.

I receive a lot of support from my employer. I get support during my day work where various people help me with my tasks. I also get lots of help from HR who monitor and assess my progress. They keep track of my degree process and organize regular progress meetings to see how I am getting on.

I do not receive lots of support from my training provider as degrees are fairly independent so it is your own responsibility to achieve your qualifications. There are many people at your workplace who are more than happy to share their knowledge and help you with your work. Alternatively if you speak to your lecturers they will help you too.

The knowledge that I gain through my qualification is very useful for my work. This is because everything that is taught is relevant to my work. It helps me perform better in my role as it gives me a better understanding to the task at hand which allows me to work more independently

There are various extra-curricular activities that you can get involved in at work. The sector that I work in holds quarterly communication events which gives you an update of the business and time to network at a venue afterwards. There are 5-a-side football teams for various projects. There are also many project based events which gives you a chance to socialize outside of work.

I would advise that you research the various roles available on the apprenticeship scheme in order to ensure you are starting the right career. It is also important that you have the right qualifications before you apply. I would make sure that you spend time on your application in order to stand out when being chosen for the course.
