On a day-to-day basis, my job role entices: - Re-measuring properties for a refurbishment job - Comprising contractual documents for subcontractors - Using a payment system to set up subcontractors and orders - Comprising schedules for works, invoices and delivery tickets - Take-offs from drawings - On-site measures - Organising invoices and creating payment notices ready to pay subcontractors My daily interactions internally include talking to my direct line manager (Quantity Surveyor), a managing quantity surveyor, buying department and design managers. External interactions are generally with subcontractors in relation to contracts, enquiries and general interaction regarding my site and suppliers for resources for sites I am currently in between two jobs and are doing work for both which differ completely as one is new build and the other is refurb.
Whilst being at Engie I have most definitely developed my skillset and knowledge as I am still quite new to construction. Within Engie I have been given more responsibility and trust within my work. My line managers are fully supporting in my work and are patient with me. As I have been given more responsibility within Engie, I have definitely developed my communication skillset as I am becoming more to terms in speaking to subcontractors/clients/suppliers more often than I have previously in past jobs. My knowledge within construction is developing everyday as I shadow my line managers and they are providing me with tasks that I am completely new with.
I am really enjoying my job within Engie as the people who I am surrounded with are fully supporting and patient with me as I am new to some tasks provided to me. As I have only been within construction for a year and a half, I tend to ask a lot of questions of which both my line managers are always happy to answer and encourage me to not hesitate to ask for help off them. I am enjoying the work that has and is being provided to me as I enjoy being challenged. I enjoy coming to work everyday; I feel I am fully supported by most staff within Engie which makes me feel comfortable and motivated coming to work.
In regards to Engie, it is very organised coming to work as I am provided with tasks to do on a daily basis by my line managers with desirable deadlines for the work. I have my own organised space within the office which is motivational and I never come to work not knowing what I should be doing for the day. My line managers don't pile work onto me, they give me reasonable amounts of work to do which I appreciate and I am provided by when they want the work completed. I enjoy this structure of work I know where I stand with deadlines and I have always got something to do. Meetings are always planned ahead so I can work what I have to do in a day around meeting times etc.
Engie are very supportive with my needs I am supported by most people that I am surrounded by which makes me motivated coming to work everyday. My line managers are very supportive as they are attentive with my work and always offer support if I need it. They are very patient with me and understand that I am a trainee and my knowledge is still developing. Our head of learning are very supportive as they want to ensure our experience within Engie and our college scheme is fair and to our best interest where we can succeed in.
Now being in the 2nd year of college, I feel that the support that the fellow trainees and I have received from our training provider is limited. We all achieve set deadlines for provided assignments by tutors yet we have a level 4 NVQ attached to our HNC course which we haven't been supported with from the college.
Within the two years of attending college, I have learnt some elements regarding general construction e.g. characteristics of building materials and how elements are assembled. I can bring through this knowledge when I am out on site seeing first hand what I have learnt in college. There are some elements within my course that relate to being a quantity surveyor but the course doesn't heavily evolve around it (there is only limited teaching around what a quantity surveyor covers within construction i.e. learning about bills of quantities).
Every so often to support our team and to celebrate our success, we will have a social event. This usually happens after a phase of the construction project has been completed - It is motivating as it is a sign of celebrating our success as a collective basis. There are professional networking events for Engie however, only the appropriate people attend these events.

Since working for Engie I have been fully supported by those I am surrounded by and its a heavily employee-supporting orientated community. Everyone is treated fairly and it's a highly motivating place to work. Being a trainee I have been provided support in relation to my college course from a head of learning sector of the company which is reassuring as they check my progress within my course and how I'm feeling about it.
- Be yourself - Show that you are a hard-working and dedicated individual keen to work - Be polite and support those around you if in need - Always consider yourself to be a team member - Show commitment to construction and your job role - Show that you have some level of experience within construction
