I work as a finance administrator in a sector finance hub. My role is varied and includes submitting the monthly payroll, recording absences, raising purchase orders, raising invoices, resolving supplier queries, preparing the month end accounts plus completion of monthly reconciliations. I am also involved in credit control and issuing weekly updates to the operations team on the expected monthly profit.
While taking part in the apprenticeship scheme I have mainly developed my existing skills as I had already been in my role for a few years. So far I have looked at improving my communication skills which involves getting a better understanding of when to use different methods of communication. Understanding the theory behind team building and looking at how team work can be improved.
I really enjoy my apprenticeship programme particularly the variety of training provided. I receive plenty of support from my line manager and colleagues which helps to make it more enjoyable. The best part for me is the time spent studying at my local centre for my professional qualification as I hadn't had any formal training in finance before and enjoy expanding my knowledge.
The apprenticeship programme has been very well organised both within my company and from the training provider. I have a clear progression ladder to follow to make sure I keep up on track and I receive regular support calls from the training provider and my employer to track my progress.
My employer has been very supportive during the duration of my course. My line manager in particular has been a great help and ensures that I have both the time and support available to complete my training. I also receive regular emails to check on my progress and to see if I require any help or guidance.
I have a progress ladder to complete during each of my modular training sessions and get regular emails to check that I'm on target to complete the course before my exam dates. I also have 3 monthly performance reviews regarding the completion of the reflective statements, this is also a chance for me to raise any issues.
I feel that having a better foundation for my finance knowledge has helped me to have more confidence while performing my job role. Completing the activities for the reflective statements helps to understand how my learning can be applied to my job role and also to have a better understanding of how my actions affect others.
There are no formal extra-curricular activities that I am aware of for participants in the apprenticeship scheme although I think it would be a great advantage if this was on offer. It would be nice to have the support of colleagues and a chance to discuss any problems experienced throughout the programme.
Yes
DHL have always been supportive in the professional development of employees and the apprenticeship scheme represents this commitment perfectly. Due to the size of the company there are plenty of opportunities for development and to progress your career. I have always had the support of my local finance team and also of the wider DHL community.
If anyone has the opportunity to work for DHL I would advise them to grab the opportunity as they will have the chance to constantly develop and work across many different sectors and functions. The day to day job is constantly evolving to keep the role interesting plus fantastic training opportunities.
