Auditing- going out to client site and performing lots of different testing. Types of testing include back reconciliations, prepayments, fixed assets, accruals, stock, inter company, equity, debtors, creditors, admin expenses, costs of sales, revenue etc. We also do stats testing by ensuring financial statements agree to what we have tested.
whilst working we go to college and study for ACCA or ACA exams. I have learnt a lot of technical knowledge through college which we can then apply to our day to day job. WHilst on the job you also learn skills on how to test various balances in the financial statements.
I enjoy the people and working in a team. I also enjoy going to college and taking exams. However, the work can get a bit monotonous, but this gets less so as you progress and take on more responsibility and perform more judgemental testing rather than just agreeing numbers to invoices. I also dont like the admin of the apprenticeship.
I joined Deloitte in the year when apprenticeships were just coming in. This was a nightmare as it delayed professional exams to take apprenticeship exams which felt very pointless. The work side of the programme is very good but the new apprenticeships are not well organised at all as we now have to do so much more admin but not during work time.
We receive a good amount of support. As everyone in the company has had to go through the experience of taking exams and learning new stuff, everyone is very understanding of when you want to go home on time to study etc. Also we now get free resits if we fail exams.
We go to college with the training provider- they offer mock exams to do for study and tutors are always available for questions. For the apprenticeship side- they are always on our case to get admin stuff done and always available for questions- however they don't know what our employers do and can't help when employers make us do apprenticeship stuff in our own time rather than work time
I feel like the apprenticeship is completely pointless. I already have to get a chartered accountancy in my job, so doing a level 4 or 7 apprenticeship does not help me in any way. It's a huge admin task which we have to do in our own time, and as largely pointless as it doesnt help me improve in my job.
There are many extra curricular activities! We have many social activities such as Friday office drinks/ leaving dos/ Newmarket Races/ xmas party. This year i cycled from Lands end to John o'groats on the Ride Across Britain, which is an event Deloitte sponsor, and there have been hundreds of charity events throughout the year to raise money
Yes
It is a really good place to start your career if you want to do anything in finance as you get the qualification, and get it done a lot quicker than you would in a small company. The people are amazing and its so fun to work with people your own age.
be super friendly and chatty in your interview! Deloitte is all about its people and you need to be able to communicate well with clients. All the technical knowledge is learned on the job so there is no expectation that you know anything technical before hand. It also has a competitive salary for a school leave, and you gain a chartered accountancy out of it.
