I am a first line manager for Housekeeping and Standards. I have a team of between ten and twenty people to assist with the upkeep of the warehouse. I am heavily involved with the 5S throughout the DC and have the challenge of making this warehouse the flagship for DHL.
I was asked to be involved with the 5S when first taking on my managerial position, however the apprenticeship I am in has improved great knowledge and technique for the 5S needed. It has also improved my managerial skills and understanding of what is expected of me as a manager.
I enjoy the team talks and different views from all the individuals within our group. Every manager has there own style of working and I pick up valuable knowledge along the way. The project we are working on is really interesting and the end result will definitely be worth seeing.
As soon as we started our programme, we were all given the information needed and what was expected from us was made very clear and concise. Whether working as a team or doing individual assignments you are always given support and guidance needed to complete tasks and pass the apprenticeship.
My employer always gives me the support necessary support to function fully with the apprenticeship. There is a clear understanding from them what is expected of me to complete the apprenticeship. I have never had to miss any of the classes because of any work issues. They are fully cooperative.
I always receive all the support that I need to reach my qualifications. My tutor is always there for me to assist with any queries, problems or ideas that I have. She always has time for each and every one that is in our group and is very helpful indeed.
I have seen the job role I am dong in a new light now I am taking this apprenticeship. I have a clearer idea of the tasks I have to do on a daily basis and always plan my day better. This has been a really big help to me.
To my knowledge I don't think that there are any specific activities set up. I have planned myself and I do know there are after work activities and functions to bring teams closer together. These are usually constructed by individual team managers on occasions when people are off work.
Yes
I have been working as a core colleague for almost nine years now. There have always been ways to develop yourself as an individual and encouragement is always given to learn new departments. I am almost 49 years of age now and don't want to change my career now.
I would highly recommend anyone to come and work for DHL. I have nothing but compliments for the company. Even when I started working here as an agency colleague in 2008 they gave me full encouragement to apply for a core job to which I did and was accepted later in 2010.
