My role is electrical maintenance around site. This includes installations and fault finding on machines. I work with a mentor who teaches me all the techniques we need to get on with to do the job safely. I also get given preventative maintenance tasks which must be completed weekly to ensure everything runs smoothly.
I've developed a lot of new skills such as hand skills and knowledge of different electrical systems and ratings. I've learnt how to wire plugs and lighting from scratch and even feed them to the distribution boards around site. We receive training to lock out the electrical current so we can get on with the task safely.
I very much enjoy the program, it is taking me into a career i wish to get into. It has given me a head start into learning how to complete tasks I never knew I'd be able to do. I even wish to get into further education to better my knowledge.
It is very well organised, everyone knows exactly what to expect from us and where to be. We are given reviews if we like them so we know exactly where we are compared to where we should be. We are given adequate praise when we do well so we continue to strive to do well.
A lot of support is received so I can comfortably progress within my apprenticeship. We are given at least 2 hours a week to get on with our work as well as having our college days fully at the college. This makes it easier for us to stay on track.
I am provided with a lot of support with easy to reach goals that challenge me. They give us meetings and targets to work towards in a given timescale so its easy to keep on target. We are also given log books to reference if we need it in between the meetings.
It helps me receive the underlying knowledge needed to complete my day to day tasks safely and efficiently. It also helps me to gain confidence in what I am doing, so I can justify what I am doing when asked by a mentor or a supervisor. They also contact the manager with any problems.
I do not get involved in any activities other than overtime. I would like to do more, however, every time i have asked for more information, it has not been sent to me or there has been nothing available. I have wanted to have a part time to learn spanish.
Yes
They are a very good company to work for with a lot of routes to progression as well as plenty of time to get on with my college work. They are patient and understanding of our needs which makes it easier to ask for help when needed as we know we will be helped.
Do your best and fully research the role before applying. The company is a very large workplace with a lot of friendly faces to remember, and they will remember you a lot before you remember them. It also requires 2 interviews and group work so if needed develop these skills prior to interview for the best chance of having a sucessful application.
