My apprentice role with Market Gravity involved being able to take on tasks alongside members of the team. This involved re-organising of a large document and repurposing it for different audiences. This was a large task for me to receive on day one. I had regular meetings with my development buddy at the office and then began to shadow his design role on a project, where I was also given the opportunity to be involved in client playbacks and workshops.
With the company that was facilitating my apprenticeship qualification, I learnt more about CSS3, HTML5, JavaScript, Database Management, Website Building and Microsoft Access. I also gained skills within the workplace such as becoming intermediate to advanced in Adobe Premiere Pro, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Lightroom and After Effects. Not to forget Sketch for prototyping. On the journey I picked up better communication and presentation skills, deadline and expectation setting as well as my own time management when others asked me for support when I was also committed to other tasks.
A good extent to the point where it was very memorable and challenging. Challenging is the most important part because I was able to hit the ground running from now knowing much at all. The team I was around in the London Market Gravity office are also such a lively, fun bunch of people and I also became involved in organising social events for the team which was incredibly fulfilling.
Very organized, especially by having a development manager at the apprenticeship classes and my work environment. The evening classes could have been more interactive rather than being lectured something of the time, but the instructor did try to alter the learning methods. The softwares we used within the classes could have been more up to date. The organization at the work environment was very organized, by knowing what I was working on and who I would be shadowing when.
A lot- generally from everyone. Market Gravity are like a big family and they welcome you in with open arms, but always check up on on you to see how you are getting on. The HR manager and my development manager would have constant meetings with me to see how the placement is going for me.
I had a lot of work in my apprenticeship within work so the qualification and coursework did put a lot of pressure on me. I completed all I could as well as possible, but in the meantime, Mo, my training tutor in the evening classes was very supportive and understanding, always checking is as to whether I was too stressed or not.
Only a little; the CSS3 and HTML5 experience helped. The software used within the qualification which we practiced on wasn't very up to date at all. We don't use netbeans IDE or Microsoft Access for data base management in my current role. Technology moves very fast these days and training for students on apprenticeships need to keep up to ensure we benefit from the training as much as possible and are more able to apply it to our daily job.
Social activities, drinks every Friday, meals out with the design team, spinning classes at the gym, yoga Fridays and also go karting. Market Gravity also participates in the palace to palace cycle ride, which Deloitte also participates in. Other social activities also include BBQs in the summer and the occasional football out front and basketball out the back
Yes
Large company with good variety of opportunities; however do note my apprenticeship was with Market Gravity, not Deloitte, as we were acquired by Deloitte in June 2017. However they are quite a transparent company when it comes to progress, newsletters etc, so it can be easy to see how they are succeeding as a firm. But at the same team can also be difficult to know who to speak to and how to find them, because the company is so large.
Explore many different opportunities for a different period- don't feel the need to stick to one. The Deloitte Digital offices in London, Milan and Seattle are very cool and there are many different opportunities within design and technology, from UX to UI to copywriters to Marketing teams. Same for the tax and forensics team. Graduate programme is also very good.
