  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Currently I am the CI / PI Technician and also the OMS champion for the Bawtry Site. This involves a lot of organising, engaging, and looking at processes to eliminate waste through Gembas, Problem Solving, Process Confirmations etc. In the OMS role I support the management teams in order to ensure all shifts are aligned with one another and everyone is working to a standard way of working. Usually an OMS Champion is the only role you are given but I have done this along side of my current role.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills through doing the apprenticeship using the PPS as a template to look at root causes of issues using the fish bone diagram. Putting a action plan into place and track benefits v's cost for carry this action plan out. It has developed my knowledge massively and put better organisation into a problem solving session than what I was used to.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoyed being able to see the benefit the chosen project brought to the site and the savings that went with it. Looking into a problem that has been there for years and solving this has been great for me. Getting other managers and operatives involved has helped me to get the shop floor buy in and complete the action plan.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I am quite a organised person so an action plan / to do list is the way to get the best out of me. The actions given to me were SMART actions which kept the interest as I was able to complete them in a timely manner. there was a couple of times I had to extend a few actions due to having to liaise with Health and Safety or PI Departments but the target were still achievable it was mainly down to holiday cover from them departments.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I was supported all the way from, Operative level, First Line and Second Line management level all the way up to the contract operations manager. I had great support around me. After each meeting each month my manager would like to know where we were with the plan, what my next steps were and was looking forward to the end result (mainly the reduction in labour :) )

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My Coach was very supportive. They give me suggestions of how to look at situations differently and they helped me with the cost vs benefit tracker of how to chose which actions were the best actions to put into place. If ever I had a problem I could email them for advise and they would come back to me and nothing ever seemed to much trouble.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • This qualification has given me skills and knowledge nobody else on site has and therefore I am able to put these into practice but also I will be able to develop the right people at Site to make CI a bigger priority. I find CI interesting and using the PPS I believe this will be the easiest tool to use when in a group to not only solve problems but remove the issues. Bawtry is very used to quick fixes but this gives us the tool for long term fixes

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Bawtry have a chosen charity each year and we do social events with this charity, Last year we supported Bluebell wood and we went and tidied their gardens for the children to play out in, Did all the weeding and painted some fences to make it colourful. We also hold a Party in the Car Park for all Bawtry employees where all money is donated to the chosen charity.

  • 9a. Would you recommend DHL to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I have worked at DHL for 15 Years. I started as a admin clerk and worked my way up to management then in to the co-packing environment. From that I have moved to the CI department. I have had 7 different roles within Bawtry with each one being a development for my own career. The company supports you in development and if you show the right interest and put the right amount of effort in it is recognised. There is always a development path you can take at Bawtry if you chose too.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DHL?
  • Work Hard and grasp any opportunities with both hands as and when you can. If something is of interest don't think it will come find you, you make the first step to understand the opportunity. The more you put in the more you get out of a job and it becomes less of a struggle to get up on a Monday morning when you enjoy your role.
