Engineering Apprentice Review

Having completed my rotation of placements across the Military Air & Information sector I have decided to finish my apprenticeship and enter the business as a Quality Engineer on the Hawk and T-45 Goshawk platform. Addressing quality issues within the Hawk Production Hangars 1-4 as well as Samlesbury Wing Line. This involves me solving problems by returning the item to supplier for rework, scrapping off the item or by rectifying the issue away from design via concession. Using these processes we can identify the root cause and also implement corrective actions. Dealing with quality issues allows me to work with suppliers and the customer but also allows me to develop my problem solving skillset.

Over the course of 2018 I also took on the role of National Apprentice Council Chair for BAE Systems. This has allowed me to develop my communication and teamwork skills

My programme provides me with so much variety in terms of work but also extra curricular activities. I have been able to experience all aspects of the business whilst and whilst developing my professional skills I've been able to develop myself as a person. this is a special company to work for

The apprenticeship layout is very easy to follow and very clearly outlined from day 1. I like the fact that although my apprenticeship has been versatile the programme has remained the same and I am clear on what Is expected of myself and also where my progress milestones are and then assisted me if I was behind any.

The early careers training team are extremely valuable with regards to our training. They do all of the behind the scenes work to make our apprenticeships run like clockwork. Should any issues arise they are very efficient in auctioning them as soon as possible and in the correct manor for the scheme.

My assessor plays a key role in my qualification, ensuring that I cover off all of my NVQ criteria and then making sure I complete my apprenticeship

My NVQ has ensured that I have covered a wide spectrum of roles across the business seeing the product through from design to delivery. The range of criteria in the differing units ensure that I must be versatile in my role and take responsibility for leaving my comfort zone to complete these.

I have consistently taken part in Early Careers fairs and open evenings and then also council lead sport events, of which I am very proud to attend and in some cases deliver.

BAE Systems offers a range of apprenticeship at a range of levels. They are so versatile that you could enter at any level of your life/development and then find a role that suits your niche. The pay, holiday, shares benefits are fantastic too. Also the early careers community really do develop friendships that go further than just work.
