My role is an apprentice wind turbine technician. There are various tasks that can be done on a daily basis these can include faults on the turbine and also servicing on a turbine. This is done simply to maintain the turbine in the best working order for as long as possible..
I have developed many skills whilst on the job here at siemensGamesa. I have learned many new tools that at first when taking on the job I didn't know existed. With these tools I have learned how to correctly use them in order to be safe at work. As well as this I have gained more knowledge and understanding of how a wind turbine operates.
I am thoroughly enjoying my programme here. Everyday I learn a new thing within the turbine and become more confident on a daily basis. The company and industry is one which is very good to get into and would recommend anyone to get into the wind industry and siemensGamesa themselves.
My programme is structured excellently and is very well planned out. Siemens Gamesa rate apprentices and their apprentice programme very highly and are very supportive in helping you in any way that they possibly can. They have a partnership with a Newcastle college whicih is very good and also have set up accommodation for you to live during your time down there. Communication between line managers can sometimes be unclear but overall it is very well structured.
I receive a lot of support from my employer on a number of issues. iemens Gamesa can pride themselves on being highly supportive on any subject and always help when they can. From fellow technicians at site to line managers all employees of Siemens Gamesa are very approachable and help when you need it. An example of this can be when you need clarification on something you are doing on a service, the technicians will stop the job and take the time to sit down and talk you through it.
Support from my training provider could be improved. For myself as a scot when I moved down to Newcastle I only had Scottish qualifications which to my knowledge would've been fine and sufficient. However, I was made aware these qualifications would not suffice in order for me to gain my qualification at the end of my 2 years at the college and that I must re-sit basic functional skills such as math, English and IT all so they would class as English qualification.
I feel that the my qualification helps me understand how to properly conduct myself within the workplace and how I can benefit from different working environments. My qualification also gives me basic knowledge in other branches of engineering that may come in handy within the workplace if anyone was to need assistance or help I may be able to help them.
To my knowledge there are no extra- curricular activities available at this moment in time. However I am very keen to further my knowledge and if the opportunity was to come up where I can do more activities such as sports, further education or social activities I will put my name forward.
Yes
Siemens Gamesa is a global recognized company that prides itself in being one of the very best in the wind industry. With regards to the wind industry itself I see not at better time to get yourself involved in an industry so new and exciting and would encourage anyone thinking of doing this then to apply.
I would give the advice to relish the opportunity you have to work for one of the leading companies in the renewable energy industry and to have confidence and an open mind as this job opens up many horizons and opportunities. If you have resilience and hard work then siemens will acknowledge that and will reward you with one of the best jobs, if not the best job (personally) in the world.
