Production Engineer Review

If any issues occur on a printing machine then they will ask me to fix it, I provide training for new jobs and operators that have not used the machine before. I also set up printing files on it for new jobs we do, I also work with OEE and SAP software and I design and 3D print work holding jigs for jobs.

I now know how to use various design software packages for 2D and 3D design. I know how to use OEE software and SAP software, I am much better at problem solving and best of all I am now a much more confident person than before I started the apprenticeship.

Overall I would say I have enjoyed it, there have been parts that have not been as enjoyable but they have never had a lasting effect. I enjoy my job and I like the people I work with. College has always been less enjoyable than work due to the tutors lack of interest and time keeping.

At first I was rotating between departments, spending 2 weeks in each. This is useful to learn what happens in the different areas around the business. However, I feel many departments didn't know what to do with me. College has never been well organised, no matter what the subject or tutor. Even at the college that I did the first half of my apprenticeship at.

I have always received enough support from my employer, I have never felt I can not ask a question and have never felt like I have been thrown in to the deep end. I always feel like I am given enough involvement and I feel very accepted into my team and other departments.

This depends on the tutor, this year for instance 2 of my 4 tutors you can go to and get exactly what you need. The other 2 you have to fight to get information, its that bad you sometimes wonder if they even know the answer. Previous years have been worse than this one.

The only thing that my training provider has helped with is exercising my brain once a week which I enjoy and when I have inevitably had to teach myself some subjects which has helped me when I have to research new tools and processes for work. Other than that though there is nothing useful.

We do quite a few charity events which sometimes involve sport. There might be some networking events that I don't know about, I have not been on one since I have been here. I have now have more dealings with other departments within the company and other companies that supply us.

Going off of reputation alone, Siemens is a vast company that produces everything from plugs and sockets all the way up to trains and wind turbines. The Apprentice scheme is very well developed and there is always progression to be made. There is always support for you and if you want more out of your job or you want to progress and are willing to put the work in, then you will be rewarded.

Build a good reputation for yourself from the start, once my reputation started to grow I started to deal with departments much higher in the business and get work that was much more interesting. Never be afraid to ask questions about a job as it shows you are interested, also any issues you ever have there will always be someone you can ask about it and they will help resolve the issues you are having.
