At college I spend two days a week in the workshop learning milling, turning and fitting techniques. The other days are spent learning maths, science and health and safety. When at work I work shadow employees from different parts of the company and learn how to do their jobs and learn new skills
I have learnt how to use both a milling machine and a lathe effectively. I have developed my maths skills and my science skills. I have also learnt about health and safety information which tells my how to stay safe when working. I have been working with lots of different people which has improved my communication skills.
I enjoy the program a lot. I have learnt a lot of information that will be vital for my future career. I enjoy my work placements as you are treated as part of the team and you have actual hands on experience which gives you an idea of what day to day work will be like.
My program is very well structured. I am in the workshop all day Monday and Tuesday which gives you a lot of time to work on projects without interruption. The rest of the week is theory lessons which are divided into maths and science lessons and health and safety lessons.
I receive a lot of support from my employer. Someone from the company comes to college every other Thursday to see how we are doing and answer any questions that we have. I also can email the company at anytime and can ask questions in a Facebook group they have set up.
I receive a lot of support from my training provider. College help me a lot with training by answering any questions I have and by reviewing work and providing feedback. They help with practical work by teaching new techniques and help theory work by recommending different sources of information and helping personally.
I feel the qualification has taught me a lot of new skills, however I do not think these skills are nessesary for my job role. I do not believe the skills I am learning are going to be used in my job roll, but are skills that may be used in different areas of the company.
I am aware of some extra curricular activities. Siemens have a six a side football league that you are able to join for £20 which is used to fund a charity. I think this is good as you have to use teamwork and the money is used for a good cause.
Yes
I feel that they are a great company to work for as they seem to deeply care about the employees working for them. They prioritize the health and safety of there employees above everything which I feel a lot of other companies in the same field do not seem to do.
When applying to Siemens I believe the most important thing you can have is work experience. Work experience in similar fields to what you are applying to shows that you have a keen interest and are able to go and work. Having qualifications in an engineering subject is important as it shows that you have some knowledge.
