I am working in the department of oncology rotating around different teams in the department where i will be working with the PA, IT, facilities, graduate studies and HR team. Each team will help me gain a lot of experience and new skills and also help with my communication skills.
Whilst working with the different teams i have learnt a variety of skills that i didn't have before i started. Before i started this apprenticeship, i lacked in confidence but meeting new people, internally and externally, it has increased my confidence massively (face to face, email and over the phone)
I enjoy my apprenticeship as i enjoy the work i am doing on a day-to-day basis and i enjoy getting up in the morning and coming to work. I like the fact that i am shown what work i am going to have to do and then i am left to complete the work individually. This helps as i feel i am learning a lot more as i am actively doing work rather that shadowing someone else
My programme is very organised as it has been discussed with my manager and i a date of when i am rotating to another team. This is from Monday - Wednesday and then i have to attend college on a Thursday. Then every Friday i am working with the PA team.
I have a 1-2-1 meeting with my manager fortnightly to talk about my role and work i am doing and if i have any questions that she is able to help me with. The teams i am working with are also very supportive as i get to talk to them every morning about the work i am going to be doing that day.
My training provider is very good as when i attend college weekly, the content that we learn is presented in a way that keeps you engaged and my tutor is very friendly and understanding. Also my assessor is very helpful when i am stuck on the work that needs completing.
The tasks that are being set for me to do on a monthly basis helps to keep me constantly doing different things and making sure that i am communicating with my department to help me achieve these tasks. If i struggle with any of the work then my tutor and assessor and easily approachable.
Within my department there are a lot of social event that are happening and constantly trying to get everyone involved. These events are usually fun which helps with the bonding between colleagues and students to help build relationships in the work place as most of these social events are working in teams.
Yes
I did work experience with the university in a different department and am now doing an apprenticeship and it shows that even in different departments everyone one is always very friendly and the organisation as a whole is very flexible with the way you want to work and home life.
Make sure you pick the right apprenticeship as the university offer such a wide variety of apprenticeships there will always be something that suits you best. It would be a good idea to ask if you could have a look around the department to get a feel of the way they work to see if it is right for you.
