  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • At the moment, my colleagues and I are full time at Glasgow Clyde College in Annieland in which we are completing and HNC course in engineering systems. We cover both electrical and mechanical subjects aswell as various practical skills that we can use within our time in the yard in the future.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed and also learned various skills since starting my apprenticeship with BAE Systems. I have developed skills such as communication, teamwork and individual as I am constantly working within a team aswell as an individual, where I get to communicate with my peers to overcome various challenges or tasks.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Since staring the apprenticeship in August, I have thoroughly enjoyed the programme that I am involved in. I have made friends with an incredible group of people which makes my time here that much more special and I have always enjoyed learning new things related to engineering and also naval ships.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship programme is very well structured in my opinion. My colleagues and I have been in college since August in which we are learning valuable skills that we will then be able to take into the business. I feel this is vital to ensure the best experience for when we start working in the yard in June.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive various and extensive amounts of support from my employer where it is necessary. For example, if there was an issue, I would be able to speak to my employer and the situation would be dealt with in the most respective and professional manner to ensure I have no further issues.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • When working towards my qualifications I receive a great deal of support where necessary from my employer. This can be anything from the amount of work to the pace of the completion of the work I produce, my employer and I would be able to resolve the situation in question.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It is fairly hard to say at the moment if our qualifications will help us perform better in out role as we have yet to experience our role within the yard. We will get to experience and learn about our roles when we go into the business and the yard in June.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have recently joined up to be a part of the team at the apprentice council where I will take part in tasks as a team to inform the other apprentices within the program about the local news happening within the apprentice community. We work as a team to create a newsletter which includes this information.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a fantastic apprenticeship scheme with endless possibilities and there are many benefits to being an employee for BAE Systems. The apprenticeship allowed you to gain and HND qualification whilst I am learning valuable practical experience in the yard which I can use later on in my career in engineering.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • 110% do the best you can in everything that you do, it’s not one you want to miss out on.
