  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am working in a team to deliver a new proposition so my day to day role is never the same and instead very varied. I have a great opportunity to experience an end to end process from concept ideation, customer testing, operations, and then delivering this to customers through marketing and other forms of communications

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills and gained lots of new knowledge whilst within my placement. Whilst based in marketing, I have had the opportunity to work with a wide range of alternative teams, such as operations, finance, technology, and legal. This has enabled me to develop my ability to look at concepts from an overall business view, rather than just from a marketing point of view.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme to a great extent. I enjoy the work I am given as it is real responsibility and I feel like I am contributing to the business. Additionally the team is great and enjoyable to work with. There is a great community feel within Tesco, especially their early careers and graduate team.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured. There is a clear division between working Monday - Thursday and completing my 20% off learning on a Friday. My manager has full understanding of the demands of my university work and never asks or expects me to work during my 20% off the job time. She will also flex my work around deadline time

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer (Tesco) provides me with a great amount of support. I have a designated early careers advisor, who is in regular contact to make sure I am supported both at work and academically. My employer also supports me where they can with my academic work, providing me with any data that they can provide. My manager is also great at supporting me with personal development such as allowing me to go onto training courses, and supporting me in any mentoring or development opportunities.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Pearson College London are great in providing support. They allow us to submit 500 word and full drafts of coursework in which we receive detailed feedback on. They make it clear that they are regularly available / contactable for advise on coursework, personal support or future career advise. We have quarterly academic check in as well as quarterly personal check ins.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am working in marketing and studying a business management degree. In turn this means that the modules that relate to marketing (e.g strategic marketing, strategic innovation) have a great relevance on my work role, however some modules, e.g law do not have direct relevance, but are good at providing business context to the propositions we are working.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Unsure - these may be available however I am unsure. If they are available then they are not communicated to a great extend / as widely as they could be. That being said Tesco has a great selection of facilities available (e.g A sports court facility and a gym that you can pay to be a member of)

  • 9a. Would you recommend Tesco to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • There are so many exciting projects and opportunities to work on and great opportunities to work with other team to expand your experience and knowledge. Additionally the culture at Tesco is great, there are loads of opportunities to develop, for example a huge array of training courses and various initiatives such as mentoring schemes.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tesco?
  • Have great knowledge of the wider food retail sphere (e.g aldi and lidl, sainsburys, and waitrose ect) Have specific knowledge of the area you are applying to and wider impacts on that area (e.g If marketing, know about Tesco's main campaigns and competitors campaigns, If supply chain, know about brexit and how this may impact your business area)
