  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a software developer using Microsoft Dynamics CRM, C# and Javascript to develop custom solutions for businesses. My role involves interpreting requirements and implementing them using either out of the box functionality provided in Dynamics CRM, JavaScript or C# plugins. I usually work on client site away from home.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have learned a lot more JavaScript and C#, and have passed multiple Microsoft certifications funded by work. I have also learned about code practices and commonly followed standards in the IT industry. Finally, I have learned about the prototyping and proof of concept processes which are involved in securing additional work.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I feel that the degree is the weakest part of the programme, and is completely separate from the actual job. I think the job is a good opportunity for those with little work experience who want to get into work after A-levels, but I think if the person's main focus is the degree, this is not the route for them, as there is little time to really focus on it with the full time job.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is relatively poorly structured; although this is being improved slightly by removing the QA aspect of the programme and having it all run through Aston University, communication between Capgemini and the university is relatively poor. The distance learners on the degree programme often feel like an afterthought to the university lecturers, who recycle lectures recorded on campus and materials from multiple years ago and make them available online.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The extra study leave days are very helpful, but other than this there is very little support regarding the degree. Apprentices receive the same level of support as any other Capgemini employee not doing the degree, which can make it difficult to fit all of the requirements of the degree around full time work 5 days a week.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support provided by Aston University could be better; as previously stated we feel as though we are somewhat of an afterthought compared to on campus students. However, there are some lecturers and TAs who are an exception to this rule, and put a lot of effort into supporting distance learners and ensuring that they are aware of where they can receive help.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I do not feel that my qualification assists in my role much at all. The degree contains Java modules and I am in the Microsoft team within Capgemini so there is very little that can be transferred to work. The only things that were relevant to what I am working on are general software engineering practices which I was already aware of.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Extra-curricular activities are limited by being spread out across different projects. The team I am in occasionally host meetups and team building days, but due to Capgemini having projects across the country, it is very difficult to meet up with anyone who isn't on the same project as you.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Capgemini to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel that it is a good place to work, and they are very supportive with personal development and talent management activities, such as funding industry qualifications. However, I would recommend the standard route of joining Capgemini over the apprenticeship route, as I feel that it provides the same opportunities without having to juggle the degree.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Capgemini?
  • The application process is more about the qualities you have rather than the specific industry knowledge you possess, at least for the apprenticeship positions. Reading up on effective team qualities and recalling examples of how you have shown the team working and problem solving skills Capgemini are looking for will be far more helpful than trying to memorize Software Engineering best practices.
