  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a tax analyst working in global mobility and expatriate tax. I work with companies to provide support to individuals going abroad on assignment overseas and advise on the tax implications and how to stay compliant with both countries legislations. I assist with preparing tax returns, payroll, have calls with individuals explaining tax legislation whilst also doing my ATT examinations and regular training sessions at work to stay up to date.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have enhanced my communication skills greatly having not worked in a corporate environment before through going on client meetings regularly. I have learnt ways to communicate effectively via email to concisely get information across. I have also enhanced my knowledge in tax and my team building skills working with a wide range of people.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy it sometimes when I am doing different kinds of things, however when I get stuck doing the same monotonous admin routines for the purpose of client delivery only and not really for personal development I don't seem to join it enough. Additionally as I do a lot of overtime to get work done this decreasing work enjoyment and work life balance.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is fairly structured as dates and courses are given for exam studies and training sessions are provided regularly. However there is hardly any feedback sessions and check ins with your people leader so you are not aware of how far along the grad programme I am and what I can do to develop further.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • When I initially started I received a lot of support as obviously all the processes were new to me however a year into the programme there is very little support. When you voice your opinions the correct way it is never actually heard. It's very difficult to get hold of your people leader. When there are things I am not happy about nothing is done about it.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a lot of support as we have taught courses and revision courses with all of our material provided to you. however there is hardly any days off for exams which require a lot of hours of study and with all the overtime were required to do there is hardly any time to study. Additionally, we were told that we could do further qualifications initially but now told that as it affects the client work delivery I cant do it.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • ATT is very relevant towards my role as it is solely employment tax based which my job is. However ATT does not go deep into the tax legislation and is quite basic compared to the things we are exposed to at work. If I had done CTA it would have been more beneficial towards my job role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There aren't really any extra curricular activities, networkings events etc. There are just quite a few informal social events that are solely based on drinking which makes it difficult for someone who doesn't drink and makes you feel isolated as there aren't many things to do with work outside of work.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Deloitte to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would not recommend Deloitte to a friend as even though it looks very good on your cv your work life balance goes completely out the window. You do a lot of work and you are constantly told off for your mistakes and told to do more and never praised and never told thank you. People don't care about your development here and the work deteriorates your quality of life.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte?
  • I would say that if you do apply make sure that you are okay with the long hours and lack of social life. Make sure you have thick skin. Make sure you get to know other people in the role and if you don't like it at the start quit early on.
