  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Prior to starting my apprenticeship, I had very little to no knowledge of programming languages and software engineering. Since starting my apprenticeship I have gained knowledge across several programming languages - Python, JavaScript, Java and C#. I have also further developed my programming skills and have also gained knowledge and skills in relation to project management.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Each day presents new challenges to overcome, which had helped me to become confident in my new skills. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time spent at University alongside working within a software development environment. I feel that this has helped me to progress quicker with the University assignments as well, as I have some knowledge/skills which can be transferred to either situation.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The organisation in relation to the programme was a little confused initially due to changes which were being implemented when we started. However, since then the organisation and the structure of the program, in my opinion, has been very good. I know what is expected of me, when it is expected and to what standard. It is also clear where help can be found should it be needed.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support I receive is fantastic. There is no shortage of help and advice when I need it, equally there is no complaint when I need time off of the project to focus on University assignments. There are numerous points of contact within the work environment who are more than happy to sit and go through things if I haven't fully understood them.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support received from University is great, the lecturers are usually quick to respond to any queries, even when we aren't there. The lecturers are very patient and ensure that everyone understands what they are teaching before moving on. They are more than happy to sit one-to-one and go over things further if you don't completely understand the content.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that the programme has achieved a great balance between the two. Whilst the working environment has helped me to learn new skills and gain further knowledge, University has helped me to further this knowledge and gain different skills, which can be used in the workplace. The skills and understanding of other technologies learned at University has helped me to excel in the workplace, as I have been able to implement some of them in my day-to-day work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are numerous activities which you can get involved with, such as game evenings this often involves a number of different board games as well as xbox/playstation, some of the guys meet once a week to play football and each month there is a team social. The team social involves going for something to eat and drink as a team, which helps to establish strong work relationships within the team.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The BT Apprenticeship Program offers a great start to a rewarding career, without the associated debt of going to University. You learn new skills on the job, which can be transferred to your learning, and vice versa. The apprenticeship also offers the opportunity to earn as you learn and become part of a team in a friendly, fun and supportive environment.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • Definitely go for it, even if you don't think that you have what they are looking for! You can only get out of it what you put into it, so if you get the chance to volunteer, go on training courses then do it, it can really help to round you out as a person and give something back!
