I am an analyst in the corporate tax department of Deloitte. I am involved in working on numerous client projects which cover a wide range of types of work. This includes tax compliance, transfer pricing, tax advisory and project management projects. I work with a wide variety of people from other juniors to partners and directors who have been in the role for a number years
I have developed my communication skills, both written and verbal. I have also hugely improved my knowledge of tax since joining around 18 months ago. This is mainly through the fact that I sit tax specific exams as part of my wider accountancy qualification but also through the variety of projects that I work on
I enjoy what I do as the work is challenging and I am always learning new things. I enjoy working with the people who are in my teams as there a good mixture of personalities and a generally young office. Everyone is very welcoming and always willing to help out.
At the beginning of my role I was told about the different exams that I will be sitting and the amount of study leave that I will be given for each exam. However, sometimes the exam process is not as organised as I would like. The structure around day to day work is more flexible and you are given the responsibility to organise and structure your own work (given that the appropriate deadlines are met)
Senior members of my teams are always willing to help out with work that I am doing within the office and also with any struggles I may be experiencing with exams. We are assigned a "buddy" and a "coach" who help with day to day queries and career progression respectively.
We have access to training materials and videos when studying towards the majority of my exams and also get some face to face tuition at college also. Tutors are generally very good and always willing to answer questions, whether that is in college or over email/phone. Some more information ahead of the more difficult exams would have been helpful.
Whilst the tax specific exams are very helpful, the remaining exams are not as relevant. There are elements that will appear in my job that I will have been familiar with because of my exams but I think that large aspects of the accounting based exams are not as useful.
Yes there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in social activities. There are weekly sports teams such as touch rugby, football and netball. There are also social events that occur every few months whether it is department socials or office wide parties. There are also plenty of professional networking events in the local area which we are invited to.
Yes
It is a great place to work with lots of very helpful people who care about your development. The area in which I work is always changing and trying to keep up with the large amount of new legislation is a great challenge. There is also a good sense of teamwork within the office and I feel as if my work is really valued by more senior team members.
Be yourself. There isn't one type of person that fits the role perfectly and the background of the people within the office backs this up. Be confident in your ability and don't be afraid of asking questions. Push yourself out of your comfort zone by speaking to new people and searching for new work.
