My current role is that I am studying the theory side of engineering and have not gone onto the tracks at this moment. however I do know when I go onto the tracks the first period will involve me to look over and shadow a senior worker to see how the work is carried out. From this I shall be able to apply my knowledge and become an active team member.
before starting the apprenticeship I studied for a level 3 extended diploma in mechanical engineering which did give me a boost when doing my work here compared to others. However I do believe my skills in certain subject areas such as the workshop and mechanical principles have improved.
The programme has been great so far and has been a very different experience as I have had to live away from home for 6 months. the first few weeks I found difficult however after that everything felt normal. however I do believe the workload which was given to us was too much to do in a short space of time and felt at times that I was under a lot of pressure.
The structure of the programme is good but as mentioned previously some of the stuff which has to be learnt is irrelevant in some perspectives as it didn't relate to the track work which we would be carrying out.
The employer gives us a lot of support and whenever we need anything or need someone to speak to then they are always there to support us.
The tutors of babcock are some of the best teacher I have been taught by. they really spend a lot of time ensuring that we understand everything they are teaching us and also take out their valuable time after work to help those who are struggling and falling behind on their work.
The qualification will allow me to put the knowledge I have gained and contextualize it in the working environment. for example in mechanical principles we were using certain formulas to calculate the amount of people it would take to carry a length of track which was very interesting.
yes we have sport activities which take place outside working hours.
Yes
It is probably the best apprenticeship scheme in the whole of the UK and if you work hard enough then you can have a secured job for the rest of your life. The apprenticeship allows you to experience life away from home which is interesting for those who have never done it as it makes you a self disciplined person which is a good quality to have.
Ensure you have a mind set and goal and get work done as soon as it has been given to you. Also the more effort you put in and more attention you pay in lessons is what you will gain out of it and it will reflect greatly in your assignments and when you are out on track.
