I deal with ad hoc indirect tax advisory issues for a number of clients, ranging from small local clients to large multinationals. The issues range from penalties and HMRC assessments to reviewing new product ranges to drafting instructions for counsel based on our legal analysis. It is highly law based.
I have learnt large number of new skills and improved many too. My legal analysis, and writing skills have greatly improved. Evaluation and analysis are a large part of my job. Research skills are also important and these are definitely developed a lot in the past couple of years here. However, this was not due to the apprenticeship as the job is the same before the apprenticeship started (I was the first year of it).
I do really enjoy my programme. I find it challenging. I also enjoy the team I work in and this greatly enhances my work environment. The 'year group' aspect is also enjoyable. Particularly spending a lot of time on various residential courses and other fun networking opportunities which are offered. However, this was not due to the apprenticeship as the job is the same before the apprenticeship started (I was the first year of it).
The programme ( as in the apprenticeship) is very poorly organised. there is a distinct lack of management over the programme. No one seems to know what we are meant to be doing when. It is always very last minute and this causes unnecessary additional stress and makes it much harder. Kaplan who provide help are terrible and also do not know what to do. The learning team was also all made redundant and now we have no contacts to talk to. We were forced into the programme, put in a room and asked to sign a document after we had already started our training contract.
I receive support from my bosses in respect of my job. however, in terms of the apprenticeship there is not a large amount of support. That makes it difficult to hit these 'invisible targets'. No one seems to know what is going on, not Kaplan or the hr team at Deloitte.
In terms of the apprenticeship there is not a large amount of support. That makes it difficult to hit these 'invisible targets'. No one seems to know what is going on, not Kaplan or the hr team at Deloitte. Our Kaplan coach does not know what our job involves, or what we need to do for our apprenticeship.
The apprenticeship does not help me in my job at all. If anything the time taken out to answer irrelevant questions and tick boxes, hinders my job. It takes me away from developing useful skills in my job. My ACA qualification is vaguely related to my job and will be useful in my future career. The CTA qualification is highly helpful to my job.
There are extra curricular activities available as at all large firms. This includes a number of different sports, offices drinks and social activities and corporate activities. I help with the student recruitment ones as well. Most activities are social and team based. We did used to have a ball but it was withdrawn this year. Again this is unrelated to the apprenticeship.
Yes
I enjoy my job and the career opportunities are great. The team is kind and supportive and you get great experience working for such a large firm and on such large clients. There is a wealth of experience to be gained from working here and it can be very enjoyable.
Make sure you chose your team and specialism well - research the qualification you will do, and if possible try and do some work experience in the team. Ask all the questions you need to in your interview. Do be prepared to work hard when needed and put in the effort though! Try to not be put on an apprenticeship!!!
