  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • my role is to maintain the copper network around the county ensuring it is working up to standards and regulations. installing copper to customer premises so that they can have telephones and the internet. I work up telephone poles and also in the green cabinets in the street which act as different access points to the network. we are mobile and work out of our vans as a single man.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt good customer skills and also understanding of the telecoms network throughout the east midlands. telecoms is a new skill area for me so most the things im learning I have never learnt before. I had good customer skills before I joined but they have got better and progressed even more.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme most of the time some days are good and some are bad but I believe that is the same with any programme as you cant enjoy everything. mostly all of the time I am enjoying my learning and the programme and it is probably the best career choice I have m,eade yet.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship is fairly organised but I believe the buddying period we have with people should be much more longer than just a few weeks to ensure we don't have to learn the ropes on our own back. the day releases to complete the nvq work is decent because we get two days release every month or just over.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The employer gives us a coach to help us out for the first two months which does help out when we get stuck in the field. I believe they should offer us some more workshops that we can decide to attend if we believe we still need some practise in certain areas.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I believe the training providers are helpful when we are having our nvq workshops. if we are missing parts of our work then we will be informed of what is missing and how to try and achieve it. I am up to date at the moment with all my nvq work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • the qualification will probably help me get a better understanding of the role I am performing and lets us research better into our roles and understand the bt policies open on the bt intranet to us. we have to gather information on our role and present it on publications to gain our nvq.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I don't know of any extra curricular activites to get involved with, and I don't think there are any sports teams available to us to access. I think they hold a few networking events but only available in cities and its always a bit too far for me to travel.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend bt to a friend because I think their is more pro's than con's and it is the best job I have had in my career so far. it is a career job and they invest quite a lot of money into us. I would recommend the job.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • I would suggest to make sure they have good customer service skills and that they need to be happy working mainly on their own as my day to day jobs I have been on my own. we have to go into many different situations and house holds so make sure you are fine with that.
