  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Repairing customers telephone lines by finding faults in different locations. These can be underground, overhead or in the PCP or SCP cabinets. We also install telephone lines for new customers; again these can be over head or run underground. Once the new line is installed we fit sockets on the wall at the customers premises.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • We have learnt lots of different skills, such as climbing telephone poles. This process takes a lot of energy and can be very dangerous if not completed correctly. It requires that you carry out a number of safety checks before you are able to climb. And wear the correct safety equipment.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • They’re are good and bad days on the job. These are mainly dependant on things like weather as a lot of the work is outside. Also you can find that there are multiple issues on a customers telephone line which makes the job take longer than it should do.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • We have days to study and complete our NVQ. We also have time to go in training courses to improve our knowledge. Sometimes these get cancelled due to levels of work that is needed in the network. I feel it is well organised however things can change in a short space of time.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer essentially gives me the contact details in order to help myself. I have all the information I need to do the job day to day however did struggle a bit at the beginning with knowing who to contact for what. Unless they’ve done the job before you can’t just ring your manager and ask

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We’ve been given loads of support whilst working towards our NVQ. Everyone in my group is on track to complete their qualifications in time. If we get stuck at all, then our assessor [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] is more than happy to help out with advice. She also makes it clear how to go about answering the questions

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I believe the qualification ensures that my employer covers the required aspects in order to effectively carry out the role. Without the qualification I feel that we wouldn’t of had as much time for training and therefore wouldn’t necessarily be as effective being able to provide a quality service.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Work has a night where they play football, however I’m not a fan of playing. Every Christmas there is usually a party for the staff. Usually we will go out somewhere to eat and have a drink or two. This was not however provided on my first year for some reason.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It’s a good place to work and everyone seems to want to help as much as possible. The pay reasonable for the work we do. If you require any help, then you get to know what engineers you can rely on for guidance. Also you get a new van

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • Try to be as open and friendly as possible in the interview. Pay close attention to details when being as to carry out tasks. Interviewers aren’t excoecting the perfect person for the job. They want someone who is willing to learn, can give good customer service and in our case isn’t affraid of heights
