  • My role is to maintain the telephone network and repair faults and connect new customers to the network. on a day to day basis this includes picking up a job or a tour (a series of jobs for the whole day) on my terminal contacting the customer and executing the task as they wish whether it be a new provide, speeding up their internet, or repairing a faulty line that is interfering with their use of voice or internet services

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my time as an apprentice I have learnt the lay out of the national telephone network and more about how voice and internet services work. • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed the programme a great deal. it is well put together and organised with enough time working on both the course material with days put aside to focus on it and plenty of time in the field to develop both skills and confidence. the training before going into the field greatly prepares you for what you will find

  • There is a great deal of support from BT with all of the coaches from your training willing to help via email. a coach on demand service to call at any time during the day plus a field coach who can attend jobs with you if needed, you can also rely on other members of your local team both senior engineers and others to assist you if needed

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • during the NVQ days that have been set aside to work on the course material our training providers assessor has been f a great help with how to lay out documents and how to best provide answers without giving the answer. they are also very good at staying in contact outside of these days to help prepare for the documents in advance

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that doing the qualifications will help in the job role as it helps to focus in on the ways and techniques of doing the job to make sure that the information is fully learned and not still being read off of a piece of paper which will mean less chances of accidents and mistakes in the field

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have so far been to one golf day with work which was a great chance to meet people from the company who have different experiences to myself and work in different areas. engineers also arrange their own team events to socialise and events professional are emailed out for those who wish to go

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel that BT and Openreach are a good company to work for with a solid training design that keeps everyone safe and installs strong skills and team work within the engineers team. As and apprentice we are also earning a strong wage rather than struggling on no money while learning

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • I would advise anyone who wishes to join to firstly not worry if they have no previous knowledge or experience as all training is provided at starts with no knowledge expectations. also to read the companies standards as you will be expected to maintain these at all times but to mainly enjoy it as the work can be hard but also rewarding and fun if allowed to be
