  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Day to day role of an Openreach engineer would involve investigating in to problems with in the telecommunications network such as disconnected lines to problems with in customers premises. Most days will involve climbing a telegraph pole to clear the fault and these poles range from 9 to 15 meters.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Every day is a day of learning new skills working for Openreach as there is such a different variety of jobs that come out day to day that you will never get the same boring job. it varies from climbing poles to going underground when completed a UG course eventually.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my job, probably more than I thought. It makes a big difference when no day is the same and you get to experience and see different places and work on different sites which is very interesting. Mainly you stay in your working patch which can range from an hour.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is really well structured and everyone seems to have a great understanding of the work that needs to be completed. There is little confusion and I feel that everyone feels that the course runs smoothly allowing little confusion. The course is structured in a way where you learn the most.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Openreach offer so much support from every angle in the business. From free eye care checks to physio therapists the company really does go out of its way to support every employee the same. There is so much day to day support which allows employees to work to the best of their abilities.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The NVQ assessor is helpful in helping each of us reach our targets and complete work on the deadline. He responds quickly when I send over a bit of work to be marked and leaves comments when I need to adjust something and make amendments to any piece of work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • All the work we do in our NVQ is beneficial for our day to day role of an engineer. The topics are based around the practical side of the job which helps the understanding of the role in the class room and when working out side on the tools each day.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Not that I know of but im sure they could be if there was enough interest from the employees. Openreach stretches arms in helping every college and making sure everyone is happy with the support they receive from managers and people in a higher role who can pass their knowledge.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Great company to work for as you get so many benefits such as free BTTV and BT sport and loads of offers inside the company such as cinema tickets with 45% off and many other beneficial things which I'm sure everyone would benefit from over a long period of rtime


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • I would goive people advise by telling them exactly what the role consists of bevcause its a very good job and everyone can get better at the job by training and yeah its very good so I would tell people to apply and highly reccoment it as a job for a career
