  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work as a Service Delivery Engineer for Openreach. My roles include installing new lines to customers, these range from standard phone lines to FTTC BB. I also deal with faults in the network, ranging from Exchages, PCPs,DPs, and end customer site visits. I must have good customer service skills at all times.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt lots of new skills in my job, such as how to install phone lines and BB. I can now also climb ladders and pole to work, I can carry out repairs in the network, I have learnt how to run internal wiring to BS. I have also learnt to manage my own time throughout the working day

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the practical part of my job the most. the NVQ is good as it means I am getting a qualification at the end of my apprenticeship. my NVQ assessor is very interactive and helpful, the program overall is well worth doing but could maybe be cut a little shorter.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • my programme is very well structured, we get 10 days off in the first year to achieve completion of all 14 assignments on the NVQ Plan. these dates are all prebooked so I know exactly where and when they are. I suppose a couple more days would be benifical though to help with the workload

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer, this is done through the 14 week training program, budding for 4 weeks and being coached at times, my manager is very supportive and my NVQ assessor is very helpful with the work. I am given regular feedback throughout my programme

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I recive a lot of training from openreach to enable me to complete the apprenticeship. this ranges from in house courses to external field work. I get 10 days a year to complete my programme which is a paid absence where I complete my NVQ work, this helps a lot as it means I haven't got to complete as much work in my own time

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that it doesn't directly help me in my role as such but it does consolidate to information and the heath and safety and procedures to follow. as I have to write about everything I have to do practically, so it re inforces that I know what I am doing and what procedures to follow

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I am not aware of any extra curricular activites that I can get involved in. I know there are some social Christmas parties and networking events available but I do not feel the need to attend. there are regular team meetings we have to discuss team bonding sessions but these have not been finalised yet

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • BT is a great place to work, every day is different and I have learnt a huge range of skills whiel working here. there is always someone to help if you get stuck, the jobs itself is fairly straight forward and I enjoy the satisfaction of helping get customers back into service and keeping up BTs reputations

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • I would say that the recruitment process is very well thought and that as long as you follow the advice given to you through each step it is fairly self explainatory and straight forward. as long as you don't mind spiders or heights its a great job with lots of potential to progress.
