  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I support, maintain and deliver live networks everyday. I will help fix faults as quick as possible whilst keeping the standard of work. Faults are picked up and I have to try and figure out what's wrong and deliver the necessary maintenance. As well as this, my team and I have many projects we can work on.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have firstly learnt how to deal with a live network and how to fix it in a very pressured environment where every minute counts. This has given me some real quick thinking skills. As well as gaining confidence in talking to engineers who I have never met before.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme a lot. It is a great opportunity to earn whilst you learn. It has helped develop skills I thought id never have along with knowledge that is very applicable to the whole company. This means that if I decide to move into a different area, I have already applicable knowledge

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well structured. I am very knowledgeable of the way the whole scheme works. I have been given a lot of detailed information about how the next 3 years goes when it comes to how my apprenticeship will plan out. Even if I didn't know anything, I know who I can ask

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A lot more than I had expected! I receive great assistance from a lot of people higher up than me in the company. This includes apprentice coaches (who are probably the least useful) and senior engineers, line managers etc. They all ask if I need help, some more than others.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • A fair amount, I haven't had a lot yet purely because I'm not far enough into the apprenticeship to comment fairly. But if I was to comment on what I have received so far, I have had some help when it comes to completing my NVQ but no where near as much as I wanted.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It gives the roll a good amount of context in the job which is needed to understand what the role is for. Doing a degree in network engineering means that I understand a lot more of what I do when I'm in work. Therefore, I definitely think I benefit from the qualification.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are plenty of extra curricular activities that I can either organise or take part in. This includes a lot of sporting events and charity events. I receive many emails asking whether I want to join a sport team or something similar. Plus, many charity events are held at BT which I could be apart of.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because its the best opportunity ive had so far in terms of jobs. So I would tell people to get on it as well considering its well paid for apprenticeship. Earning a decent wage at 19 whilst getting a free degree makes me so glad I don't go to university, hence i'd love other people to join

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • Be yourself, be knowledgeable of the company and make sure that you are willing to learn anything when it comes to IT networks and computers. If you want to learn and earn, this is the best opportunity for it. It is worth the wait and you'll understand why it's so hard to get in if you make it.
