  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a fibre engineer. My role involves installation and commissioning of fibre broadband to new homes. On a day-to-day basis I install CBTs, splitters, Aggregation Nodes and pull FTTP UG cables to customer premises. I also install internal terminal equipment and exchange components at OCR and OLTs. I work in underground structures where I use gate guards to be safe.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes I have learnt new skills especially in fibre installation and customer service. I also learn new things everyday. Openreach uses a lot of technology and IT systems. We sign in and sign off each day via our mobile phones and also record that we are on lunch break. Openreach is all about using technology and IT systems.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme a lot because I work with people from different backgrounds. The job is also varied everyday. No two days are the same. I get to learn a lot of new things everyday. The more experienced engineers are also willing to help out. The manager is approachable and is ready to help out anytime.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured. I know exactly what I have to cover and for the apprenticeship I have an assessor who assesses my progress. I have a buddy whom I work with and if I experience any difficulties, he helps me out. Also the manager gets involved by being open to me and emphasizes that he is there to help if I have problems.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from the employer. I take the van home and I do not have to worry about transport. I get a lot of training both on the job and in classroom. I also get a lot support via the buddy system. The buddy system works well because even if I get assigned to work with a different engineer, I am still supported.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider provides so much support toward my qualification. I get days to study for my qualifications. During study days I have an assessor to help out if I have questions. Also throughout the study period I can ask the assessor. We have also received a lot of training materials which is handy as we work toward our qualifications.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that my qualification helps me to perform better in my role. As I progress with my qualification, the units cover the technology, IT, health and safety and customer services which are all critical for my role. In fact without the qualification, it would be difficult to excel in my role.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • BT is such an excellent employer. The organisation is such a massive brand and it cares for its people. Engineers are well respected in the organisation and one can progress to a high level as an engineer without necessarily seeking a management position. Also one can move to any other area within the business provided they have the knowledge or can learn the new skills. BT is one of the few organisations that does not layoff engineers!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • Learn more about the company before applying for the job. If one is applying to be a trainee engineer, learn more about health and safety. Health and safety is the number one priority. Also make sure you like working in a team. Know one or two things about customer services. If you like DIY, then BT can train you to be a highly skilled engineer!
