  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Travel to meet customers with in my working patch, sometimes outside my working patch. I install or provide telecommunications service. I also provide services for faults and repair of telephone and broadband services. I maintain, build, repair the Openreach network. I also give customer advice on their phone and broadband service and equipment.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned much in my time with Openreach. I already had good communication skills with regards to customers, however working for Openreach has highlighted the importance of communicating well with customers. I have also learned about running cables, fitting equipment and testing within the network. Fault finding and diagnosing problems with customers services. Health and safety with in my job has also been well covered, for example pole climbing. I have developed and learned many new skills and am continuing to do so.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed the program to date. I have meet many new people both trainees and other engineers. I enjoy learning new skills and ways of working safely. I have enjoyed traveling around my patch meeting customers and solving the problems with their phone and broadband services. The training has been well structured and the trainers have all been great people, knowledgeable and friendly. Although time is short with the training.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program is well structured, but more time to achieve the work and requirements would be helpful. The trainers are great, very helpful and really want you to succeed. the organisation is very good however start times in the morning do not allow for far away travel and modern traffic conditions on the road.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer has been very supportive with all aspects of training and my apprenticeship, time and resources are given to us trainees. Their is always someone to help if you get stuck. My employer helps keep me on track and allows me time within working hours to work on my apprenticeship.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have received good support from my Training provider, I have been give time to achieve the work. There are also a lot of helpful people to give advice and support. More resource information would be helpful because the requirements are sometimes hard to understand. More reference material or easier to find reference material would be helpful to aid in meeting the requirements.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It is very useful to allow you to review working practices and quality standards of my job. it forces me to research and understand health and safety and the job I do. this gives me more knowledge to work better and safer, learning all the details of my job to meet the requirements of my work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I understand there is extra-curricular activates, but at the moment I do not have enough time to partake. I look forward to joining and getting involved in social and professional events and activates to meet more people i would like to further my understanding of the company and future at the company.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Joining Openreach has opened a new world for me. Meet new people and learning new skills. It has provided me with an opportunity to grow, develop a new career in the communications industry. I recognise the opportunity and would encourage others to be apart of Openreach. It has all allowed me to use my past experience in my work, such as problem solving and dealing with customers. I would tell anyone considering a job with Openreach how positive this experience has been for me thus far.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • I would advice anyone applying to Openreach to do your research on the company and work they would be undertaking in their role. To take time in understanding all aspects of the training and to approach the apprenticeship with maturity and an open mind. I would advice a person to approach anyone for possible advice and help along the apprenticeship journey.
