The team I am in sits within Exchange Traded Derivative operations. We manage the commissions charged to our clients, our clients are smaller banks, asset managers, fund managers, not individuals. My day to day role involves ensuring the commission we charge our clients is correct, this is by managing an offshore team to ensure our static is correct, answering client queries as well as liaising with front office.
Definitely, I think a big part of the culture here is accountability and ownership. Regardless of what you do specifically, you are aware that your output has an effect on the service UBS provides as a firm, and that skills such as punctuality, time organisation and communication are quickly improved and developed, regardless of whether you had them or not.
I get a real satisfaction from my work, I get on well with my colleagues and enjoy the work. The extra help provided by the firm is also excellent, providing help if you have any problems outside of work. The study program was also excellent, I finished my exams in September 2018 but I had more than enough support to do so.
Very well structured, exams were booked in advance with the exception of my third exam as I was the only one sitting it so was able to book it myself and take it earlier. Moreover, from my first week it was clear when we have training days as well as sessions beyond our exams, such as excel. Our study was up to us to organize with our line managers which worked well.
This is what I consider to be the best part of UBS since being here. I have recently had significant mental health problems and the support and understanding I received from HR and my line manger was more than I could have imagined. Total understanding of my situation, full encouragement of time off if needed and for professional appointments. Something which as a benefit is not publicized however the people have been fantastic for me.
Plenty, before every exam we had a two day session in house with a lecturer as well as a one day course a few months before the exam. They were always on hand to answer email queries and we could even call them if needed. WE also had access to what felt like unlimited hours of video lectures and thousands of practice questions online.
A lot of it is not that applicable, however I work in quite a niche area and the program was a broad one so I hardly find this surprising. My third exam however was on Derivative operations which was incredibly useful, although as I had been in my role for a year it was my role that helped with the exam rather than the other way round.
I tried to set up an apprentice football team however other banks didn't cooperate. Since being here I now regularly play football with two different sets of people. There is regular socializing amongst apprentices however I would say that, understandably, compared to university social activities fall short. I would personally like to see an attempt to network with other banks apprentices however there has been none of that.
Yes
The support since I've been here has been amazing. I have recently had significant mental health problems and the support and understanding I received from HR and my line manger was more than I could have imagined. Total understanding of my situation, full encouragement of time off if needed and for professional appointments. Something which as a benefit is not publicized however the people have been fantastic for me.. I am going back to my secondary school to sell the program to pupils who do not feel university is for them as well encouraging my friends to consider UBS after uni.
I honestly never know the answer to this question, I would just say don't be scared to as there is nothing to lose by applying. Whenever my friends who have not worked before ask me about getting a job I tend to tell them that your achievements on CV only go so far, in interviews and assessments centers I think employers want to see the type of character that will fit into the culture and someone that can work collaboratively with others.
