Our team is responsible for server and OS management and maintenance. Most months I go to the data center and performing installs for physical servers. I also work in a task force to remediate data quality issues with our infrastructure as a service platform. I am also part of a team that is responsible for clock sync infrastructure.
I have learnt many new skills in my short time at UBS. I have developed my Linux skills, an operating system I have not used before. I have learnt many commands such as cat (used for reading files), grep (used for searching files), man (used to get information about the command) and ls (used to list the contents of a file).
I enjoy the program as I have learnt many new skills and have received many opportunities. I have attended a few events including Microsoft ignite. At Microsoft ignite I spoke to many different companies who taught me what they did and why they did it and how they can benefit UBS.
My program is organized reasonably well at UBS as we have contacts who's job it is to look after apprentice and answer our questions. Our provider (firebrand) is less organized because when we first started they kept asking us to sign a form as they kept having our details wrong.
I receive a lot of good support from my employer. My manager and team are very supportive and helpful, and give me advice and guidance with things I do not understand. My apprenticeship coordinator is also supportive as she finds out the answers to any questions or problems I may have.
When I am on their site I receive good support from the training staff and providers as they are very knowledgeable. When I am away from them it is difficult to get the support I need as it can be awkward to talk using email and get the information across .
I think the qualification provided by my training provider(firebrand) is very helpful as the qualification and courseware has information directly relating to my role. I have used what I learnt on the course while working. On my security course I also learnt many websites that are useful for keeping my email and passwords safe.
There are many opportunities forvolunteering and helping the community. There are sports ones as well as business ones. There are also many talks about many different areas. I have attended them myself and found them enjoyable and educational. I also think there are a lot of good sports events for employees.
Yes
There are many different roles so you can find an apprenticeship for whichever is best for you. As well as that, the salary and benefits are very good and much better then other apprenticeship programs I have seen. UBS have many apprentices so are experienced in dealing with issues that may occur.
The best advice I can give someone applying for UBS is to research the company values and remember a few of them. Try to relate them to experiences you have had in your past. Make sure you know about the role you have applied for as there is an interview that tests your competency.
