I have to think of ways to solve small parts of larger tasks which are assigned to me online. I have to think of a plan to solve this problem and then I go to someone experienced to check if the plan makes sense and then i write and test code to solve the problem.
I have improved my teamworking skills, being able to communicate my thoughts better and explain concepts in understandable ways. I have learnt how to code in C#, python and PLSQL. I have learnt to provide solutions for software such as: MongoDB, Oracle, Autosys(C#) and how to complete the steps in a commercial software development cycle
I enjoy the problem solving aspect of my work, all my work is challenging and constantly pushes me to think logically and expand my working knowledge on various new technologies i come in contact with on daily basis. My team have been very helpful and have helped my move on with problems i've encountered
The structure of work within UBS is very good, initially i was provided with a complex but non time constrained task which allowed me to develop my initial skills without too much pressure to deliver a piece of software quickly, this allowed me to learn how things work in depth before working with the rest of the team.
I receive lots of daily support from my team as we are in constant contact regarding the work we are collaborating on, furthermore i also have a biweekly meeting with my line manager where we discuss apprenticeship related concerns and i can voice any problems i have. My mentor was also very helpful initially when i needed constant assistance to complete tasks, but naturally as i have learnt more he lets me get on with the tasks without micromanaging me
They do provide support, however in the first few months of our apprenticeship we didn't go on any courses and if i hadn't of recieved such good help at work I would of been at a major disadvantage. I feel they should also mark project drafts quicker so it is easier to make improvements.
I feel the training is helpful to someone with no experience developing software whatsoever, however i feel like it would only be helpful if the training was the first part of the apprenticeship as most skills taught in the courses will be learnt in the first month of working anyway.
Yes there are multiple societies you can join depending on your interests which host events and networking sessions. There are also multiple networking events, formal and informal. Such as lunch and drinks type events as well as structured mentoring schemes. There are also sports teams and a strong initiative to complete volunteering.
Yes
It is a very good company to learn a new skill at and there are many opportunities to progress in the future. Also they have a strong attitude towards investing in their employees and are quick to provide any training you feel will beneficial to your role. The onboarding process was very business orientated however, and for technology apprentices it want particularly relevant.
Be confident in the interview and for technology, create some small coding projects to have something to talk about in the interview and also research the business side of the company. Also ensure to tailor your CV to the specific role you are applying for and apply for the role early.
