I complete a mixture of tasks such as research, preparing slide decks for proposals, compliance tasks such as CIR/GAN returns, sitting in on calls and meetings, information requests or chasing HMRC for payments/following enquiries etc. I also have online compliance risk training and skill development training to do throughout the week.
I have learnt many new skills since joining as lots of the software I am required to use on a daily basis, I have not used before. My knowledge on tax and business has increased massively through the Kaplan training, PwC training and through completing different tasks. Many personal skills have been developed in my time here, such as public speaking, addressing people correctly (eg. emails to clients vs. speaking to people internally).
I really enjoy my programme. The college courses feel very relevant to my job and the tutors are excellent. The only problems I have with the programme is the lack of knowledge internally on progression/exams as the Higher Apprenticeship scheme is relatively new at PwC, and there tends to only be a few people joining it each year.
College courses are well organised and we are told in advance when we are required to be in college, and when our mocks and written exam dates are. This makes it easy to plan revision and work accordingly. I feel there is not enough communication around the computer-based exams we are required to take. We are not told of our exam dates/rough times until a maximum of 3 months before the exam date, which can make planning revision and making sure you have covered all the content in time tricky.
I receive plenty of support from my employer. When joining assigned a buddy and career coach to help with any queries you have. They also arrange events for all Higher Apprentices across the South East to get together and work together so we can mix with one another and see what everyone else at our level is doing, which creates a good support network with others.
We have our initial training days, where the teaching is great. But then most of the work towards our qualifications is expected to be completed in our own time. However, my tutors give us their phone numbers and emails to contact them if we ever need help on a topic. There is also seminars on the website which help.
I feel my qualification is hugely helpful in improving my performance in the role. Having little tax knowledge before starting, everything I can do now is generally down to the training I receive from my training provider (Kaplan), and courses run by PwC themselves. They cover a range of topics and most of it is very relevant to my role.
Yes. My work have many sports activities to get involved in, a Health and Wellbeing society, Social committee (to get involve in organising team events such as dinners, Christmas party, annual ball etc). They also have a New Joiners Committee, where you help prepare resources for new joiners and then meet them and help them integrate into the team when they join.
Yes
I enjoy my job at PwC. I also think it gives a lot more responsibility to you right from the start, which I enjoy hugely. It gives a good balance of training for qualifications, work and other activities. Mostly, the people are really good and genuinely enjoy working at PwC.
To not be scared off by having no tax knowledge before joining. This is expected as few places would offer any accounting or finance Alevels. When you start here, you are put on training 'crash' courses to give you an introduction to everything, so you aren't lost when starting to complete work.
