Predominately hydraulic modelling, and GIS, which includes building, analysing and interrogating models to predict flooding with sewer networks. In addition to this liaising with clients, attending meetings and surveyors and working with numerous different teams across the country, and world. Sometimes I'll go out on site to view what is happening on site and see if the model is accurate.
Developed hydraulic modelling skills, I have learnt how to build hydraulic models from scratch while following a proper audit trail as well as how to audit an existing model. Additionally, the use of GIS software to produce maps and plans and to interrogate different GIS data, all while studying at university and gaining valuable knowledge.
I enjoy the training programme, it gives me invaluable experience in the workplace, learning an array of different skills which I can use day to day. In addition to this, attending university allows me to learn additional knowledge, which I may not otherwise have learnt in the workplace but can be invaluable for the future as it can be applied to my job.
The programme is pretty well organised, there is a specific apprentice contact in the business who can answer any queries in addition to this you'll be assigned a delegated engineer and supervising civil engineer who will help you along with your ICE side of the apprenticeship. There is also an apprentice residential/development programme in which you take part in numerous courses and residentials over 3 years.
As above I receive support from the specific apprentice contact, delegated and supervising engineers as well as my line manager who if I had any concerns or queries would be able to help me out with what I needed. I feel like no matter what support I needed I would receive this.
The training provider (Leeds Beckett) are very good with their support, there is visits from their staff to the work place (once or twice a year) and if you email them with queries regarding your work or a lecture they're responsive and very helpful with the questions you have asked.
While studying for my qualification and working at the same time, I feel that it works very well and goes hand in hand with each other. University teaches you the background knowledge you may need for your role, although some of the work at university does not directly relate to the job but even then you learn skills such as communication, presentation and analysing which improves you everyday at work.
There are several activities to get involved in, there is often an office organised event once every month or bi monthly which involves an array of different activities. Also there is often more informal events where several people organise a night out or pool. But there is also the opportunity for networking at events and there's an annual sports day!
