I work in Histology which is the study of tissues. One of my main responsibilities is to carry out routine histology procedures in drug safety and drug discovery studies. I also have extra responsibilities within the lab, such as general lab maintenance and inputting data from studies on a computer programme. I work in Histology four days a week and on the fifth day I concentrate on my university work.
I am studying towards an Applied Bioscience degree with the University of Kent which I work towards one day a week. I have also learnt more about the general anatomy and the function of tissues which I have enjoyed learning about. Personally, I feel more confident and my communication and networking skills have improved.
I really enjoy the programme I feel well supported by my team, manager and other apprentices. I enjoy learning on the job, and also being able to have the opportunity to find out more about other departments which I am interested in. There are a lot of people to turn to if I need some help.
The programme is well structured. Four days a week I work with my team in my department, and for one day I work towards my university degree through an online learning platform. I like how flexible it is, as I am able to move my study day around if I have more work on one week for example.
I have a good support structure. My manager is always on hand if I have any problems. I also have a buddy who I can talk to if I have any general problems. My supervisor gives me on the job training. I also have a mentor who gives me general career advice and how to navigate the company.
As the degree is completed online, if I have any problems I email the lecturers for the module we are working on and they can give me guidance on the topic or piece of coursework I am stuck on. I have face to face contact with them every 3 months.
In the modules I have completed so far, only 1 topic has been directly related to my role. I've learnt more about what my job entails through the on the job training provided by my supervisor. I feel the degree provides me with a general biological understanding which may be more relevant to other departments in the company.
On site, there are events organised regularly to network with other people on site. There is an apprentice network, which is run by apprentices and they organise social events outside of work such as quizzes or parties. Within my team I have an annual team building event, last year it was an escape room.
Yes
As I feel that I am well supported by my immediate team and also my line manager and other apprentices. GSK is a great company to work for with lots of perks. As an apprentice we are eligible to the benefits that a full time employee is also eligible for.
Try and get some relevant work experience as it will help you to stand out from the rest. Also, make sure you come across as interested and eager to learn in the process as it makes you more employable. Research the company and its values, and be yourself in the process.
