I work on sensitive projects within government contracts as a software developer. I am given all the support I need and am given meaningful work. I write code in Java, review tickets, write unit tests, attend daily stand ups and have the ability to input my opinion on the project.
Since starting my career at CGI in 2014 I have developed my software development skills which has improved my personal development as a result. I started at CGI as a level 4 apprentice and then progressed to the degree apprenticeship at the end of that. Training is fully available to me within CGI, should I chose to expand my existing knowledge base.
My programme has opened me up to many exciting and new opportunities. I enjoy the fact that other companies are also on the same programme because it opens my eyes to how other cultures are, which are external to CGI. I am glad I took the degree apprenticeship for this reason.
As a distance learner, it can be difficult to get hold of tutors when not in the University. It is hard to know when the best time to contact our tutor is due to not knowing their schedules and free time. Communications from the university is not always given leaving us to chase this up ourselves.
My employer has been incredibly supportive throughout my career. I was given a mentor when starting the degree. This mentor is someone senior within CGI who has experience that you may not encounter on a day to day basis. This is useful when looking for alternative view points and also for expanding your network. Within my project my team are understanding of my need to complete university work and also that I may not know everything. As a result they are always willing to support me with whatever I may need
As previously stated, it can be difficult to contact the training provider when not in Winchester University due to being a distance learner. It is not feasible to go and talk to the provider directly and therefore I need to rely on phone calls and emails. I have a monthly call set up with my tutor now to go through anything I am working on and also any thoughts or concerns I may have
Knowing the theory of the work I am doing helps me see things from a wider perspective. It is good that I see more aspects of my job other than just my role because it shows me a different way of thinking and also backs up why I do the things I do.
There is a full Sports and Social Club which is really good for meeting new people. This is set up and organised by local members and anyone can set up a club. CGI pays into this scheme as well providing discounts for members who participate in the scheme. For example, lunch time badminton and afterwork football is free on SSC. As well as discounts on theatre tickets and events.
Yes
My favourite part about CGI is the flexibility and community. With the offerings of the Sports and Social club it is easy to make new friends and networks. On top of that flexitime ensures my work life balance is in check. I have the ability to work from home which is good for when I need to go to appointments etc.
Sign up to the Share Purchase Plan as soon as you can, this is a great incentive which can build up a nice amount of savings without even realising. The Sports and Social Club is also very worthwhile, there are plenty of different activities which help you to settle in and feel part of the community.
