I will be assisting on many various different types of work, such as putting together cost trackers to help us understand how much we have to charge clients as well as helping put together diagrams to help us advise companies to how to transfer their money into their subsidiaries as well.
I have learnt many skills during my 6 months here. These include things such as much more advanced communication skills in the way that I write emails to clients or to team members, as well as developing my technical skills, developing and learning more about tax laws in this country and around the world.
Although this is a completely different experience from school and presumably university, I am very much enjoying this apprenticeship since it helps to prepare you for the future years of life, when you will eventually have to get a full-time job to be able to support yourself, whilst earning a qualification alongside working.
It is very well organised. We always get emails from mentors and our counsellors to double check on us to ensure that everything is going well and smoothly. If we ever have any doubts or issues, we can always talk to them, and the programme itself is very well laid out as we know what to expect a lot of the time.
We receive a lot of support. As mentioned before, we have a counsellor, as well as a buddy who can relate to us since they were only in our position a year before we joined. They are there to help mentally, as well as physically if we feel like we cannot handle tasks that have been given to us.
We receive a fair amount of work - but since it is a professional qualification, they do expect us to do a lot on our own, and therefore be more independent than if you were in school still. We get taught the material in a college environment and are then left to ourselves to revise for the exams.
Since the work EY do is so technical, the qualification and training through our provider is very important since it helps us understand the more difficult tax concepts a little easier, and then this knowledge can then be applied directly in to our work and therefore showing how useful our trainer is.
There are many professional networks that we are able to join. For example, since I am a Muslim; there is an EY Muslim Network which enables us to come together for events as well as talk to people across the whole firm, allowing us to network more and get to know individuals who we wouldn't usually meet.
Yes
It is a very enjoyable place to work, with both the work being difficult but satisfying to conquer and also the other people who work here are very inviting and supportive of everything you do. So you won't ever be alone at work, since you will have a buddy and a counselor and if you have any issues, you can always voice it to them and they will help you to resolve them.
Try your best. Although the application process looks hard, give it your best shot and don't be swayed by the difficulty of some of the tests. They look at persistence and the ability to learn more from your mistakes rather than a book-smart person, and they will also judge you on your desire to work in accounting and finance. So if that is your passion, then go for it.
