Associate Review

My role as a first year associate mainly involves preparing work papers for substantive testing as well as selecting samples. Additionally, performing a lot of the testing. It is very hands on from day one so you learn a lot everyday and straight away. We also have a lot of opportunities for direct client contact which is good.

Throughout my first few months at EY, I have definitely developed my problem solving skills. As well as this I have also developed my confidence. This has been necessary when discussing issues with clients, as well as asking for help from colleagues when necessary. Additionally, I am also more confident with suggestions for improving the way we do some things.

I enjoy the programme a lot. All though the hours can be quite tough, I feel that I am gaining a lot of valuable knowledge and experience. As a result of this, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with EY. Everyone is very approachable and helpful, which makes it a lot easier to enjoy the programme.

It is very well structured. We attend college in blocks leading up to the exams and are given time for study before the exams. Although, my first exam is not until May, but I attended college for this back in September before starting at the firm. This seems a bit strange and I am not sure if this is the best way to do this. However, for my following exams, I will be at college just before which seems sensible.

We receive a lot of support. Everyone has a careers counsellor that they can go to, to discuss any issues or problems we may have. Additionally, when you first join, everyone is assigned a buddy from the year above, they are there to answer any little questions you may have, as well as guiding you to the right person with any queries.

A fair amount. We go to college in blocks and are provided with training materials to use at home. As well as online sources available to us. The college also has the option to speak to a tutor when not at college to answer any queries we may have. This is helpful.

So far, I have only done one week at college and have not had any exams. Therefore, it is difficult to determine how much this will help in my role. However, I assume that the qualification is very relevant to my day to day role, and so I am sure it will help me perform better.

Yes, there are plenty of social activities. Including firm wide, as well as smaller engagement team events. There are many sport teams as well including football and tennis. There are many networks to be involved in, such as the woman's network, diversity & inclusivity network, as well as all different religious and cultural networks. There is definitely something from everyone.

It is a great company to work for, that really recognises individuals for the things they achieve. They support you through your qualification and ensure you get as much out of your time with the firm as possible. It is a good place to work, especially to gain qualifications and experience.

Ensure to be yourself throughout the recruitment process. Remember that they want to see what you're really like and whether you would fit with the EY values. Make sure you really research the company and understand what they stand for and their values before applying. Do your best and be yourself, no one can expect more than that.
