  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an apprentice engineer I assist the site, section and senior engineers in carrying out site setup, setting out, levelling activities, writing permits, reading drawings and also sit in meetings to discuss change or solutions throughout the construction phase. Each day is never the same and also changes largely from project to project.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Throughout out my 3 months at Leeds college of building I extended my theory knowledge into areas I didn't even know existed whilst also gaining my level 3 qualification and now going on to complete the HND & HNC. I am now on my site placement and again gaining experience and knowledge to help me not only carry out my daily duties but to also understand the project as whole.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • When first starting with BAM the whole of my college year were sent to Leeds College of Building to complete our level 3 qualification within just 3 months of block release. Although this is very compressed it is very rewarding at the end and its a great feeling to have it out the way so early in the apprenticeship. From here I am now on my first site placement which will last around 12 months. During this time i will also complete the first assignment of the HND/HNC and gain the site experience required to go on to complete the next stages of my apprenticeship.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • During our time at college working under the people development sector we were supported by [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] who were always on hand to give any advice/help on any questions we had regarding work life and also for some of the apprentices with life living away from home. Now on our site placements all apprentices are signed to a line manager who manages all their activity and PDR whilst on that site placement. Whilst working for BAM I have felt very supported throughout.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Whilst completing the qualification at Leeds College of Building all tutors were always on hand to answer any questions I had whether that be during a lecture or I was always able to drop them an email at any time or even meet with them during a free period etc. Also whilst on site placement we still keep in touch with our course tutor who is helping us to carry out the first assignment in the next stage.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • During college blocks all the theory required to carry out the duties of an engineer is gained whether that be; maths, health and safety and/or surveying etc. It can sometimes be a little miss understood when learning some of the theory but their is all the support there to ensure you pass and once on site placement the theory begins to explain its self and become much clearer when seeing it in practise.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes! During the college block daily table tennis tournaments would take place in the canteen at lunch times their was also a weekly 7 aside football league that my college group had a team in. We also took part in a trip to the local go karting track. If extra curricular activity is something your interested in Leeds college of building can definitely provide this.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
  • Spend time carrying out a strong application and if you are only part sure its the course for you apply regardless and attend the assessment day. You have nothing to loose and it can only expand your knowledge of the course and make a decision for you. Good luck! q
