  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role requires me to train and hone my skills throughout the week. These skills range from hand skills to theory work, and are improved through the college day. Occasionally we will be asked to do some work around the college such as manual handling. The main role is that of a student, as we have to ensure that our training is up to a professional standard.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • While on the apprenticeship I have developed my hand skills and knowledge of the required subjects. I have also learned more about electrical and instrumental operations and how to maintain them. Another important skill I have learnt from the course is how to be more independent and live alone and independently.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The program itself is quite enjoyable, with high and low moments. Some days will be very active and engaging, while others will seem to drag and become dull. Overall the course is a very engaging and hands-on one, with the tutors, course leaders and other apprentices being very friendly and helpful.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme itself seems to have a strong base structure, with us knowing what needs to be done to achieve our qualifications. Sometimes the course's structure can waver, with us having quite a few days where we just have to get on with assignment/study work for hours at a time.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Our employer gives us a lot of support. We receive regular emails asking us how the course is doing from our coordinators. We're also assured that we can email them any questions or improvements that we have. Furthermore we also have scheduled meetings with our line manager to ensure our education and well-being.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We receive a lot of support from our training provider through the use of tutors and course leaders. They're always looking for feedback on how to improve the course and are generally accepting of any criticisms. They take the time to ensure that we understand everything before moving on topics, and also go through hand skills multiple times to ensure that we know it.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification will help me with my work on site, as it will allow me to carry out the tasks needed with accuracy, efficiency and most importantly with safety in mind. It also makes me more confident in the jobs that I do, and allows me to follow any procedures safely.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many extra curricular activities held by the college's residential team, with a different activity being held every night, and large trips being held every weekend. These activities range from cooking, to sport to engineering trips. Sports is also regularly held on Fridays and sometimes during the weekend.
