  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a usual day I am expected to complete audit work to a high standard which is not lowered simply because I am training. This involves conversing with supervisors to understand what is going to be expected from me. When out working on site at a clients I will have to discuss clients financial data with them, usually leading to conversations with FD's. I shall be responsible for ensuring my work is as complete as it can be and that any outstanding work is discussed with the supervisor.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • BPP is the training provider used by RSM and provide courses for our professional qualifications and having the extra external support of a tutor is very useful for exam specific questions. Within my role I have improved on working in a team dynamic since this is what i'm usually doing and have understood how to communicate effectively within a team.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The external training provided is excellent as it focuses on the requirements for the professional qualification. The normal day to day work can be challenging when you feel there is little help from your supervisors or that they are more willing to help other members of the team since they are more capable and have been there longer. Quite often the thought of wotking with these people makes me unhappy to come to work but it is difficult to speak to management because of the office dynamic.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured with heavy internal training when first starting so that the basic understanding of the job is there, however it does lack examples of practical application. The external BPP courses are run well and we are booked on them by RSM's exam training managers which helps take care of the stress of having to organise a workload as well.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Generally, my seniors are very good at being approachable about any problems and I don;t doubt they would go out of their way to sort something out should I need them to. The HR team is weaker purely because I feel they don't make themselves known therefore feel I couldn't go to them with a problem. Overall I feel like the team as a whole is supportive.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider is excellent. Tutors send out emails before the course in case anyone has any questions and always stress how open they are to further emails once the course is over. They also reply promptly with quality advice as they take the time to read and mark work properly. I have yet to have problems with BPP.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The theory learnt from exams is often not applicable in the real world however scarceness to gain the correct qualifications to practice in my role. The basic principals learnt and key terminology discussed is useful however that is about as far as it stretches. I enjoy learning towards my qualification and think as I complete more it may become more relevant.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • RSM audit department run loads of work 'socials' which really help to bond with the team and understand how to interact with them. Also we are encouraged to attend young professional networking events where we talk to other apprentices from other companies to understand to field they work in and create professional contacts, however these are only a couple of times a year.

  • 9a. Would you recommend RSM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Most of my friends are in similar situations where they would like a career but not to go to university. This apprenticeship would be perfect as training is supported and funded with many people in your office having been in the same situation as you and understand your position and can advise where necessary.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to RSM?
  • When completing aptitude tests practice somewhere else first so you understand the time restraints. Dress formally for the interview and have some research in the company before attending. During the assessment centre don't be afraid to speak up and lead the group as this quality is easy to pick up and demonstrate.
