  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Each day is something different, here in Leeds we manufacture medium voltage equipment. In the first year we are learning how to build and manufacture this equipment while attending college one day a week. This is usually assembly work but can include a range of things such as casting mouldings, assembly and electrical testing

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • As you move around on production you learn lots. Each week is learning a new assembly or build. Further things include learning at college studying for a HNC whilst doing NVQ work at the workplace. Every day is a learning day and you pick up lots of new skills and knowledge.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my program, as previously stated each day is different and learning has to be continuous. You work with new people every week and the weeks really fly by. I have been doing it for 7 months and it has flown by. Another bonus is a half day on Friday which is really good.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The training is very well organised. A set plan of where I am and what section I am learning is set out from the start which is flexible around my holidays. Training is structured and set out so I learn all the manufacture before testing and all support required is fair and good.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Schneider have been great supporting me so far, they are fair and support me in my college work and work life. Any queries I have had have been dealt with quickly and professionally by my mentors and HR. My mentors Harry and Gemma have been outstanding and approachable and have resolved and sorted anything that has gone wrong, it is nice to have a good relationship with your manager when you know they support you.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider is Leeds city college, the support is enough to get you through the course and the NVQ which is work based is supported through staff at work and you can find the info you need at work. The college does help you through the course at a standard level.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The training required at college is relevant to work, more so the NVQ which is work based learning and evidence is completely work relevant and units picked are that have been selected by me and my mentors to use the knowledge in work and stay in line with the company ethos.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are some social events at Schneider, these are usually in the that you're based in. There are company events such as a Christmas dinner with everyone you're working with and days out that you can attend for example the last one was the operators went airsofting. Another example is all Schneider apprentices going on a team building week in Southampton.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Schneider Electric to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Schneider to a friend as it is a good company to work for, learning is structured and well organised and the level of support and mentoring is outstanding to help you through in both the work environment and the college environment. There is also lots of potential for career progression and it is evident throughout their management is ex apprentices.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Schneider Electric?
  • The application is easy enough to do, it is online to submit a CV. They're not mad on the grades as long as you show you're passionate and will work hard to achieve good grades in college and work hard at work. The assessment day isn't scary and is relaxed which makes it less daunting. All staff were approachable and friendly on assessment day and interview which helps.
