  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My daily role at the moment is looking after all assets in the airfield ground lighting department, this can be anything from lights on the run way to the VP barriers which control the perimeter of the airport to the substations which provides electricity to different sections of the airport.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My skills have developed considerably since coming on site at Stansted, i am confident when using a wide range of tools on site and this has come from the teaching of the techs on site, they have been very helpful. My people skills have come on a lot too since joining i have become more confident in myself and also talking in front of people i don't know.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the apprenticeship very much, i look forward into coming into work as my day is usually very varied and i see lots of different areas around the airport which i enjoy. I get on well with all the techs and have made many good friends since joining the airport

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The on site part of the apprenticeship is very well structured you move around all of the different parts of the airport so you see a very wide array of jobs and helps you get a good idea of where you want to be when your four years are over. I enjoy the college part much less as my experience at Harlow college has not been enjoyable due to lack planning.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • MAG have been very helpful whit supporting me through my apprenticeship they are always putting me through training courses and management / techs are very easy to approach if i have a issues that needs to be resolved. the support from other higher level apprentices is also very helpful as they have been in my position previously.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I don't not receive enough support from my training provider i feel as if i am given a task and i have to find out about the subject on my own using the internet for example instead of actually being taught the subject so i understand it properly, i cannot recall a time where i have actually been taught anything by a tutor in my second year at college. I feel really underwhelmed with the guidance given from the colleges i attend this needs to be improved for future Stansted apprentices

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • All of the relevant practical knowledge i have learnt during my time at work has been learnt on site by techs teaching me by either watching them or doing it myself with their supervision. All the things i learn at college have very little relevance to my day to day job i think this should be improved on in future generations of apprentices.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have done multiple extra curricular activities such as filming for MAG and BBC promotional materials, we were put forward for volunteering in our local community. I also attended a golf society made form current and past airport employees in Norwich. There are no end to activities that you can get involved with at work.

  • 9a. Would you recommend MAG Airports to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • MAG have been very helpful during my apprenticeship and the career paths once you are in with the company are very varied and you have lots of chances to progress. It is a very unique place to work and is a fast place constantly changing environment which will appeal to lots of young people

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to MAG Airports?
  • I would tell them to be confident during the application process and to do lots of research on the company so if they interviewers have questions you know the answer. It is important to also be yourself during the interview so that you show them your character and also to be honest with everything you put on your CV.
