I am a Summer School student. I have had various tasks such as working on balance sheets and finding company invoices. The work is given to me by my co-workers and when I finish they give me more.
I haven't received any qualifications but my skills have developed. I have improved on using Microsoft Excel, feel more confident about meeting new people and have also gained some knowledge about auditing. I have also learned about other people's experiences as well.
I have enjoyed this programme a lot. The work is interesting but at times can get boring and repetitive. I'm not really concerned over this since my colleagues are great to talk to and overall make working a more enjoyable experience.
BDO have really valued me even though I am only here for 2 weeks. I am involved with work and my co-workers always try their best to explain to me about what the work involves and why it is being done.
The programme is structured well. The induction day is at London, at the Baker Street office. You get to meet all of the other students as well (around 30). We received presentations about the company and did teambuilding activities to help build friendship between us. I was back the next day for a 9am start. I spent time at the office along with time at client sites with work given to me by my co-workers. The support is great wherever I am.
Since I am not studying, I do not receive any support.
Support is always available wherever you go. My manager always ensured that things went smoothly and never hesitated to answer any questions that I had and always made sure I reached client sites without problems.
The flight to London was covered by BDO along with travel to/from the office and client sites. You also get paid a good amount which is more than I could have asked for.
As well as lunch in the office, I had the opportunity to attend an intern night out. This really depends on what office you're based in.
Yes
The overall experience is fantastic. You get to learn what auditing is really about and also get to actually experience what it is like to be an auditor. You get to meet new people and improve your skills. On top of this you gain work experience and you even have the chance to gain a place on the school leaver programme. If you are thinking about studying accountancy then definitely get a place on the summer school.
For the application process, take your time. Don't rush the competency questions and make sure to upload a CV and cover letter. For the online tests make sure to answer every question correctly. Don't start guessing even if time is running out as it's better to get more answers correct and guessing will just not work. For the interview make sure to have an experience to talk about behind each skill. E.g. if a question has something to do with teamwork then make sure to have an experience ready to talk about relating to that. Make sure to ask some questions after the interview. For the presentation, make sure to understand what services BDO offers and how it could help the chosen company. Also be prepared to answer any questions about your presentation. Finally, be yourself and don't worry if you take a while to answer or stutter. It's more important to take your time and give good answers. Please apply and good luck.
