  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Running the store, managing staff, running the safe and hours used. Arranging shift cover in cases of sickness. Performance and misconduct meeting with staff. Booking holidays for staff. Doing weekly health and safety audits and action repairs and replacement where needed to all issues identified. Fixing it issues and monitoring staff performance.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Health and safety training has been improved and I am now health and safety champion in store, I also have received additional training in training all new staff members and monitoring their performance looking for areas where most attention is needed. I have also been trained on stock and order principles.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Like learning new skills and having a certificate (when it finally arrives). Enjoy the free environment to some degree although I work better in a structured environment which unfortunately aldi does not provide. It was good to see my progress with each new meeting, it made me feel like I was making an achievement.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Well structured, trainer from lifetime uses old outdated equipment that keeps crashing causing huge issues and delays. Other than that the structure was well laid out and the training was simple and effective. Some units were a little cumbersome but once these were explained I was able to do these easily.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • None at all, don't even provide in store training hours other than for meetings with lifetime rep. Head office refused to make these off prod so as these would count towards the hours used to run the store these were never provided so ALL my work was done in my own time, unpaid.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • A lot, I am always able to contact lifetime for help and support. The store management were available most of the time to sign of the visuts with the trainer but other than that all support was provided by lifetime. It was comforting to know they were there when needed.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • A little, most of the training I knew already but it's nice to have it officially recognised. However I believe this will be most useful in a new job, both in applying for and getting the job as well as allowing for future training without having to redo a lot of it.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • None. Aldi used to provide team building events but like many other benefits these were cut as a cost saving measure. If we're want to do anything we have to do this in our own time at our own expense and aldi will do absolutely nothing to facilitate this.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Aldi to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • Treat staff poorly, underpaid with no annual pay rise, refuse to acknowledge union representatives, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] No option of progression/promotion. Benefits keep getting cut as cost saving measures, pay no longing rises meaning a yearly pay cut in real terms.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Aldi?
  • Don't! There are quality paid less stressful jobs elsewhere. With many benefits that aldi don't provide such as team building, staff discounts, bonuses etc. And they come with the added support and security of union recognition which aldi refuses to recognise which means you have no means to fight for your rights.
