My role involves working in an analytical lab where we run a lot of chemistry based assays. Day to day activities vary greatly depending on my schedule for the week. It can involve days spent solely in the lab or days spent elsewhere. Normally however a day can involve running assays, writing them up, attending meetings, sorting documentation and projects.
I have learnt so many new skills already in my apprenticeship. I would not have gained this experience from university. I have attended courses to develop my impact in meetings and give better presentations and because of this I have been able to give presentations in front of large groups of people. I have learnt skills when running methods and techniques in the lab and have learnt how to properly write documents and assay write ups.
I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship. there is so much teamwork involved and the work is very interesting. The company is amazing and so interesting and diverse. The apprenticeship exceeds beyond my expectations, my team is really nice and easy to talk to which makes asking questions really easy even if I think they may be silly
I believe my program is very well organised. When I started I was given a proper induction to the company and the labs and trained in core elements needed to be able to go into the labs. The support is always there and you are wanted to ask questions. I get one day a week to study which is enough to get my work done. I have meetings weekly/ every two weeks with my mentor and manager to ask questions and have meetings weekly with team to delegate tasks.
I receive a lot of support from my employer, whether it be in the lab, with writing up assays, filling out forms or with coursework sometimes. It is everywhere as everyone is willing to help you with worries or just questions. I am never to afraid to ask when I am unsure.
I receive a good amount from my training provider. we have tutors ready all the time to answer questions about assignments and give good feedback. it is very easy to ask a question and et a substantial response whether it be about assignments or trying to understanding theoretical aspects further.
I believe that my qualification is very good at helping me understand the theoretical aspects of equipment used in the lab and my understanding of other aspects in the company. my coursework tends to overlap with what goes on in the company so it helps me understand data in meetings.
there are lots of activities to get involved in whether it be giving talks at community events to students or those interested in science to social events for team building or getting to know other people in the company. you can volunteer for so many things that will give your great experience and influence your personal growth
Yes
It is an amazing and diverse place to work which treats apprentices very well and gives you opportunities that rarely come around. they are very trusting in you but also understand that you may not have the same level of knowledge as they do and are always pushing to help develop your knowledge and understanding
Be yourself, make sure that you apply for something that you enjoy. AZ has aspects ranging from Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, chemical engineering and more so there are so many fields to chose from. Prepare for the interview as best as you can but don't stress yourself out. Read about the company and your role and remember what you wrote down in your application. Be prepared to demonstrate lab skills.
