Working as an apprentice Quantity surveyor involves dealing with subcontractors and clients on a daily basis. The tasks in which you are given by your line manager will have the same principles behind them but will be different each time. My role currently is to assist the commercial manager with the handling of the subcontractor. Whilst being on site I am still completing my college work on a weekly basis, which is monitored by regular Skype calls from tutor to check progress.
I have learned many new skills and feel more confident as an individual since beginning this apprenticeship. The social skills as well as academic skills you learn from college are highly beneficial. Communicating with other apprentices everyday builds bonds with different people. Whilst being on site I have attended health and safety courses to develop my understanding of the most important part of the construction industry. Working on site at has also allowed me to develop my skills in order to work well within my team and be a real assistance to the project.
I have fully enjoyed both the college side of the apprenticeship as well as being on site. You are supported by the college throughout, to ensure you get the maximum out of your education. My team when going on site have been very helpful in assisting me to develop my understanding of my role.
Since starting I have been given inductions at any new phase of the apprenticeship making me feel more comfortable going into my new role. You are given clear deadlines of when college work needs to be completed allowing you to manage your time wisely. As stated previously regular skype calls when on site is a very effective way of monitoring progress.
The support given from the apprentice management team is very helpful. You are given clear indications of when you will be going on site and when you will be back at college. They also work with the training provider to organize social events for the apprentices to encourage team bonding.
The support from the training provider does not just stop once your college block has ended. You are given college work to complete on a weekly basis whilst on site. The support is excellent as they monitor your progress via Skype calls, making sure you get the maximum out of your education. Any queries regarding college work, tutors are always happy to help and will offer guidance to help improve the quality of work.
Having achieved my level 3 in my first college block, I have been able to take through the skills I have learnt and the knowledge of the construction industry gained to my on site role. Having that insight into construction before going on site made me feel more comfortable as i had an idea of what to expect and the sort of things i would be dealing with on a day to day basis.
Whilst at college we had organised meals for all bam apprentices as well as group events like go-karting and bowling. Being at college with other apprentices who are in the same position as you, socializing with them comes naturally because you are surrounded by the same people each day. Our group set up a 5 aside football team whilst at college which we all thoroughly enjoyed.
Yes
I would recommend the Bam apprenticeship because of what I have accomplished with the company in such a short space of time. I have made friends through the company that are located all across the country. The Bam apprenticeship allows you to learn so many different skills through the versatility of the scheme.
To others applying to BAM Nuttall you should be very enthusiastic about the scheme as it is a massive opportunity for you to be heavily involved in the construction industry. You will learn social skills as well as academic. Do not be nervous for the interviews and assessment days, Bam are a very understanding company and will look after you on the day.
