  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as an Auditor at Ernst & Young LLP, requires me to firstly travel to the client site (or to the office if we work remotely). From here I meet with my team, from which we establish what needs to be accomplished in the day. My main tasks include the core auditing of accounts within a companies financial statements. For example, checking whether the accounting procedures that are carried out by our client, meet International and UK Accounting standards. I also meet with the client regularly on a single and team level in order to discuss matters.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have mainly developed my confidence to a large extend. With a supportive team behind me I have been able to communicate effectively and been able to deal with those that are on all levels of the clients hierarchy. I have also developed my organisational skills as I have had to work within teams and hand off work to those above me, which requires clear documentation.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I truly believe that Ernst & Young have created an environment from which any school leaver and enjoy their experience. They fully challenge and create opportunities for school leavers/apprentices and support them to a large degree. I have enjoyed the programme thoroughly and believe that this approach should be an industry standard.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is very well organised and structured. It has a dedicated support team that are there to support at all times. This is on both a personal, business and academic level. It is clear from where I will take my exams, be assigned to jobs and receive development opportunities. Again, the methods employed by EY should be industry standard. - Especially their online portal that lays out the future of the programme for each individual.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification is essential to my role. Every degree of the qualification (ACA) ties in directly with daily tasks of being an auditor/accountant. Without the ACA, I would not be able to perform the daily tasks that I do. Therefore, it is essential to the programme that this is carried forward.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I am heavily involved in recruitment activities that are carried out by the firm, opportunities that are offered to a wide range of people. I have been involved from the marketing of the scheme, to the real life recruitment process for future employees, to the final offer holder event. I am also involved with the EY Foundation as a mentor to young people.

  • 9a. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • EY offers a hugely supportive environment from which a school leaver can achieve the same as anyone with a Graduate/University qualification. EY offers a world class qualification as well as a challenging and unique path into the world of professional services. The support also offered by EY is second to none, and I truly believe it should be industry standard.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • Be prepared to come out of your confident zone, but be confident in doing this by playing to your strength (Which everyone certainly has!). As much as you can prepare for the recruitment process, be prepared to be flexible in your approach on the day and get to know everyone (Other candidates especially).
