As an apprentice engineer, I assist the more senior engineers in tasks such as marking and setting out works, taking measurements and drawing diagrams, logging and sub-sampling samples etc. As I gain more experience, I will also gain more responsibilities and eventually be able the carry out these tasks independently.
I have learnt a wide range of new skills, as when starting the apprenticeship scheme I had zero previous experience in the industry, therefore when in college I picked up new skills e.g. surveying using machines, drawing accurate diagrams and general skills that come with working in the industry. While on site I have been able to work on developing these skills.
So far I have really enjoyed the programme. Firstly I enjoyed the college side of the scheme as it is a great introduction into the programme and gives you the opportunity to meet like minded people. Furthermore, on site I have enjoyed slowly gaining responsibilities and independence while still being able to have fun with my colleagues.
Overall the programme is highly organised and structured. Before going on to site we start the programme going to college for a 12 week period so we can build a foundation of knowledge before starting site placements. Also while on site we are given time to continue with are studies so we always have time to keep up with it.
We receive all the support we require. This could be support while living away from home, e.g. getting living away allowance and getting travel back paid for every weekend. We also receive lots of support with work, whether that be with college work or with work on site, you can always get support from the college tutors or your line manager and other colleagues.
Our training provider is Leeds College of Building, and they support us a lot with working towards our qualifications. All the tutors are willing and able to support you with 1 to 1 sessions and quick replies to emails about work. Moreover, while on site we complete Skype tutorials so help us to keep up with our qualifications while not at college.
In college before going on site we gained a foundation of knowledge based upon the industry as well as gaining some new skills required for the role. However the best way to learn about things is to be on site as you are gaining real job experience, and it is easier to understand things as there is context to what you have been taught.
While at college we where offered a variety of extra-curricular activates, for example we played 5 a side football every week while in college in a student league. Also in college there was pool tables and table tennis table which we could play during breaks and even did tournaments with prizes.
